There is a game I play on Facebook (yeah, I know, I know...) called Zombie Lane...it's run by Digital Chocolate and so are the forums. Someone posted a question in Spanish the other day, and I answered it in Spanish since I knew the answer and the language. (The game has versions in Spanish and German, that I know of. Not sure which other languages it supports, but those two for sure.)
Anyway, the moderator came in and informed us that using any language other than English in the forums is against the rules because "not everyone can read it" and those who speak a foreign language must use a google translator to pose their question in English, and then, I presume, take all the responses and post them one by one into the translator to try and make sense of it... :psyduck:
That's retarded.

S'il vous plaît ne pas parler n'importe quelle langue, mais en français sur ce forum. Ce n'est pas juste pour les francophones qui pourraient être cachés sur le bord. :psyduck:

How about posting your answer in Spanish and also providing an English translation in the same post.

I wonder, did they explain this to the original poster in Spanish? If not s/he likely did not have a clue about what they were saying.

Sure, they can set whatever rules they like, but that doesn't mean that those rules aren't retarded when you sell Spanish localized versions of your product.

Probably their angle is that their moderators can't read <foo>, so you can't speak <foo>. But really that's just an admission that they'd like to make money by selling to foreign markets, but they don't want to spend any money hiring moderators/support staff that can speak their respective languages. Classy, that.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head there...the moderator came back and explained (in both Spanish and English) the forum rules, and then in the next post went on to say that the moderators only know English, and they have to be aware of if any foul language is being used and they can't rely on online-translators for all of the bad stuff....but yeah, that's the part I think is retarded. If you are going to release the game in several different languages, your forums should *support* those languages, not ban them.
