I had an interview today and when I asked what kind of work I was looking for...I said "I just need a job" and I know that's going to **** me in the ***. I tried to fix it by saying "so I can help the family out" but I don't think that is going to fix it. ****. I suck at interviews.

LOL, yeah, that's not good. Sorry man. Maybe you'll get lucky and they won't care.

One bit of interview advice, it is ok to take a few seconds before you respond to a question. Don't just blurt out the first thing that comes to mind but say it in your head first and think about it. Sure you don't want to sit there in silence for minutes while you come up with the perfect answer but you can take 10 - 20 seconds before you reply. It helps save you from making bad statements.

Yup, not the best answer. It makes you sound desperate, and sadly the add on you did makes you sound *really* desperate.

A better response to that question would be one of the following:

"A job where I can feel valued and contribute"
"A job where I can feel a sense of accomplishment and help make a difference"
"A job where I have an opportunity to use my skills to their utmost ability"

I dunno, Aizle. It depends on the job in question.

I doubt you'd score points with any of those answers while interviewing for a gas station clerk position.

It's probably not going to hurt you as much as you're afraid it did. Let's face it, you answered honestly. You didn't try to bullshit them with some highbrow motivation for working. They already know that almost everyone interviewing really just wants any job they can get, and you at least had the balls to come out and say it.

I felt that aside from that, everything else went well. But that one thing really stuck out as something that was bad. I guess we'll see if I get the position or not.

Good luck sir. Learn from it if nothing else comes of it.

Meh, do what I do and tell everyone exactly what you think. It's such a pain to tip toe around hoping not to offend someone. It's not my damn problem if someone gets upset by something I say. **** those people.

Also, I don't even think about it before I say it. Yeah, you wish you had that kind of freedom.

Yep. It can have negative consequences. I didn't get the job, btw. They sent me an email saying to **** off. I appreciated their candor.

Basically. Word for word:

"Thanks for applying. We are not able to offer you the position at this time. Furthermore, we think you should find a sturdy tree and hang yourself from it."

I thought it was pretty harsh, but I have another interview tomorrow. But I totally don't want the job I am interviewing for, so that automatically means I will get it. Stupid tech support jobs...

Jesus christ, I can't believe a professional would send out an email like that.

It all seemed kinda...I dunno. I'm not applying to any more jobs on craigslist, though.

I've seen and applied to plenty of jobs on Craigslist - I was surprised it was a legit resource but kept running into folks / resources recommending it. Whenever possible when you find a job listed on Craigslist or elsewhere check the company site to see if they also list the job directly and apply via that method. Avoid any CL or elsewhere postings that seem kinda...idunno.

Good luck!

In all honesty, I got my two best (and still current) jobs from Craigslist.
