Post subject:  Damn Doctors
So I had a cough for a while (close to a month) finally said enough and went to the doctor. She put me on Prednisone. Started it last weekend. By Monday I was exhausted and lethargic, slept most of Monday and Tuesday, super thirsty, which also led to a lot of bathroom visits. Started feeling a little better Wednesday but the dosage was also going down. Noticed that my vision was blurry on Wed called the doctor on Thursday she had me come in today.

The steroid was affecting my blood sugar, the reading was so high today she checked a urine sample and said depending on how it was I might need to go to the ER. So no more of that stuff, now I get another drug to try to get my sugar level back down and I have to test my levels over the weekend. So I go in for something minor and come out way worse than when I started.

I have never had any issues with my blood sugar before so hopefully everything clears up. My vision is still bad today though although better than yesterday. And to top it all off my cough is back, :(

Elevated blood glucose is a known and fairly common side effect of prednisone. It's good that you called.

I didn't know that about it being one of the side effects. I usually check my meds for things like that but this time I didn't, I just knew something wasn't right. I am actually very healthy so this kind of thing freaks me out some.

Plus I just got a call from my doctors office on call physician. He said the check they did against my blood was even higher than the monitor reading they took. He said it was actually coma level, but the fact that I was having a conversation with him was a positive sign :shock: He told me to up the dosage on the other med to bring down my level, but now I'm worried I'm going to drop too far ahhhh. Guess we will see what happens. I actually feel ok just a little tired and still can' see very well.

I had something similar happen to me. I had been sick with the flu and it lasted a little longer that I thought it should.

When I went to the doctor and told him what my symptoms were (besides the normal flu symptoms, frequent urination, blurry vision, funny taste in my mouth, etc...) he checked my blood glucose level and it was abnormally high (even for someone who is sick).

It's a good idea to know the symptoms of both hypo and hyper glycemia, for yourself and your family members, and be aware that when you (or anyone) is sick, it plays havoc with your glucose levels. And also be aware that many medications (over the counter and prescription) can have dramatic effect on your glucose levels.

It's our great medical system! Take a pill.

My dad was bleeding a lot in his nether region a while back. Called his doctor's nurse asking to see the doctor ASAP giving her the details. She was supposed to call him back. Mom came home and compressed it to get it to stop.

Nurse called him back 3 days later asking if he was still bleeding. lulz......He never got in to see his doctor, but they offered an appointment for one month later.

I had what was believed to be viral meningitis a couple of years ago. The earliest a doctor could see me as 30 days. The ER did tests, but was unable to determine the exact cause. They told me I had to leave because they had done all they could do.

So I went home, suffered thru, and luckily got better. If not, I guess I would have died at home. BTW, I have insurance(s), but the hospital refused to keep me for observation.

Great system. We should totally keep it the way it is, because any sort of nationalized system would be incredibly bad. You may have to wait to see a doctor or be limited on what you can have done as treatment......oh wait.

Wish you the best. Keep an eye on it yourself, and try to study up on everything yourself. Don't depend on doctors to do it for you.

I predict nine different pills before you're through with this.

Prednisone is a nasty evil steroid (synthetic corticosteroid actually), if it didn't work for so many things it would be schedule 2.

Expect to get moon faced. It is a common side effect.

Hope you get better. Remember medicine is an art and not a science. What works well for 9999 people can cause horrible problems in 1 person.

Counter rant. you may not want to read this.

1. All medicines have side effects.

2. Insurance companies and the government pay the doctors so little that they must see at least one patient every 10 minutes to pay for the rent, and the other staff.

3. It takes three times as long to explain to a person why you are NOT giving them a medicine, as it does to give them a prescription.

4. Ergo, lots of pills.

5. Blame your insurance, and your government for making this true. Stop blaming people who gave up more than a decade of earning life time and are being squeezed out of business, so the people who control the money can put a person with a quarter of the education in charge of your health. And that person would not have recognized what was going wrong with you.

The value of a good Pharmacist, is worth more than any doctor when it comes to meds. If you have reactions or interactions issues talk to the Pharmacist, if their any good they'll talk to your doctor and work out what's best for you.
Stay away from walgreens, cvs, etc. Find a small local pharmacy, you'll be a patient to them not a customer.
