So I finally decided to sync my phone and I updated iTunes to 10.4.1. iTunes is still functionally worthless and unable to sort media by multiple columns simultaneously. How can such a simple idea still be omitted after 10 major iterations?

Because your average Apple user is still mystified by the ability to sort based on one column...

It matters to those of us who use iPods/Pads.

You can use VLC Player or Spotify on Macs.

This is normally the option I would pursue, but when I purchased my 3GS the options were: another Blackberry, the 3GS or Motorola Backflip.

While I'd certainly be thrilled to be able to sort my music by multiple columns, I can't honestly say my experience iTunes has been negative.

Thirded.

I don't spend all that much time trying to sort my music, but then I don't have several hundred gigs of it.

iTunes works fine for what I use it for- storing and reasonably organizing my music. And putting it on my iPod quickly and easily.

Especially since their filter works pretty amazingly well to get to exactly what you're looking for.

I'm not the biggest fan of iTunes (I have some sync-y problems and it's always kinda sluggish, as opposed to everything else on my system not called Steam), but I can't really figure out why I would need, want, or ever use this proposed function.

I generally sidestep iTunes these day in favor of Spotify, anyway. Wireless sync FTW.

I don't like iTunes.

But then, I manage my music through Windows Explorer. *shrug*

That might work if you don't have that much music. But if you have almost 406 GB spread out over 27352 tracks, it's hard to remember what music you have you can listen to.

Organizing your music by genre and then album by release year would be an awesome way to see what you have in a particular flavor.

Problem with that is two people generally can't agree on what genre to categorize a particular track as. I find genre pretty useless as a sorting filter. If you sort by artist, iTunes will naturally sort them by album. Now, I've only got about 8000 songs, but that's already a secondary sort, and I've yet to find a need for a tertiary sort.

Moreover, more tracks wouldn't change that. Having 80,000 still wouldn't force me to need a tertiary sorting method. I don't have any individual artist with that much music that sorting by artist and then album doesn't cut the mustard, and I have Prince's complete work.

Thankfully, we can edit our ID3v1/2 tags so I can genre-lize my music based I personally internalize it.

It's not artist then album that I need, it's having everything sorted by genre, then release year and then those sub sorted by albums, which wouldn't be a tertiary sort since it already groups by artist album.

Additionally, DJ mixes that have a cut sheet for each track so you can associate the track with its originate artist Album/single LP and it's mix/compilation album would be handy.

You'd need it if you had Pat Boone's complete discography.

This is also a valid point.

View > Column Browser > Show Column Browser

View > Column Browser > Check Genres

This may help in the future.

Hmm, this may work well enough when just going through one column. Oddly enough, if you right click the column browser, it shows you which mode it is filtering by but you can't change it. Instead, you need to change it in the menu.

I can't add new **** to my iPods without iTunes and then if I sych or don't synch or the moon is too full it tells me to **** off. iTunes is needlessly fussy.

One of the great things about Android is that you can plug in the USB and just drag and drop files as a standard file system.

Same thing applies to Windows Phones. In fact just about ANY smart device (phone/tablet/e-reader) that isn't Apple.

It'll be interesting to see how the Amazon handles this.

I hear ya Rafael. One of my biggest disappointments with Apple is how their actual music playing interface on their devices (iTunes included) lack so many features that they seem totally uninterested in adding. The iPod sucks balls for sorting music.

Why can't I sort all tracks by an artist based on rating or playcount or... anything really. Usually when I'm going to listen to music, I go through my collection selecting songs that I like and make a playlist with them. Doing that on iPod takes me about 10x longer than it does on my computer. It's so slow and painful.

Oh, and I also hate how iTunes loves to delete stuff off my iPod for no reason. "Oh, you just want to add 1 song to your iPod and nothing else? Too bad! All your apps will be deleted for you if you do this!"
