You would be better off looking for a new car. If the motor is gone, even if you try to rebuild it, that transmission will go soon. The Taurus had a **** trans.

Rebuilt with new parts? OEM or aftermarket? What are they replacing?

Usually the internals that are toast get replaced, but they all have to get replaced together to preserve balance (pistons, rods, piston rings, cylinder sleeves etc). Nothing in the cylinder heads should need replacing (cams, valves, springs, retainers etc). The block and heads should be fine.

Is it getting balanced? If they are replacing rotating internals, the flywheel will probably be need to rebalanced. All those costs add up.

You could probably buy a new crated turn-key motor for cheap too.

Actually, the problem is probably in the heads. Flattended cam or worn valve guide (yes, regular oil changes are important). I have one cylinder with low compression and increasingly misfiring. I'm hoping my former mechanic, now unemployed, ex-con, ex-addict brother-in-law will repair it, but I want to have an idea how much to offer him for the work--I think he can do it without having to pull the engine.

Get a quote from a shop on the labor. It's probably like 6-10 hours of work. Shops bill around 60 for auto work, 90 or more for power sports vehicles and certain cars. The mechanic probably gets a third to half of that. So I'd say the labor is worth maybe ... $300 or so.

Mind you, it might take him a lot longer than that without the tools and whatnot, but that's what a shop would bill and pay the mechanic. Plus parts.
