I spent New Year's Eve at a beach party on the north shore of Oahu. Great bonfire, lots to drink, a spectacular meal... Rang in the new year and watched paper lanterns float away on the winds out over the Pacific.

Tonight? I'm exhausted and out of sorts, and acutely missing my daughter. I'm 4,500 miles away from home and feeling every inch of it. The surf is pounding outside my window. Fifteen foot waves at the break just out back, and 20-30 foot waves called for on Wednesday, but I'll be on a plane by then.

I watched Lost in Translation the other day, just to re-experience the atmosphere it sets - that palpable sense of distance, isolation and being awash in something totally foreign. That's me tonight. Not that Hawaii is all that foreign, but that traveling alone is for me. After six years of marriage and a divorce, I thought I should take a little time for me. So off I went on the first solo trip I've taken in eight years. It's been fun, but I'm ready to go wrap myself up in what I know, and to hug my little girl. Just a couple more days...

Jeryn, glad you took the time to get reacquainted with you.

The ocean waves sound awesome :)

You needed to take some time for you, sounds like the trip did just what you needed it to do for you.

Thanks all! And no worries DE, lol home feels like home regardless and my ex and i actually like each other a lot more when we're not trying to be married to each other. I'm glad now that I'm going home tomorrow and that it wasn't time yet today. I went to Kaneohe Bay with some friends and rented a pontoon boat for the day... Went and anchored at a sand bar and went reef diving for a while, which was really cool. I actually found a healthy one, which was nice, because other stuff had been beat all to crap. Right about the time we were thinking about leaving, and everyone but me had already piled back onto the boat, up comes a sea turtle. He was as curious about me as I was about him apparently, because we hung out swimming circles around each other for a good 15 minutes or so. Absolute best way I can think of to wrap up the trip.
