It started with me wanting to spend my money to purchase a replacement and ended with me getting a set for free; but should I rant or rave?

I purchased a set of dishes for my boat from West Marine. One of the bowls was broken. No big deal really.

The paperwork in the box stated to contact Pfaltzgraff at a 1-800 number to order replacements. I would have to pay to ship the broken bowl to them, and would then pay 1/2 price for the replacement.

So I called Pfaltzgraff. Waited 45 minutes on hold then spoke to a representative. She stated 1) I could not buy a replacement because I had not purchased the set from them, and 2) the item I wanted was not available. Ok..... I have in writing from the company to call them for replacements. Also I see that the item I want is available on line directly from them. So I calmly call her on those facts. Then I calmly insist on speaking to a supervisor because I wanted to tell the supervisor I was going to report their company to the state for fraud.

Now I have a code and an e-mail from them stating they would send me a free place setting.

So I saved money.

But this makes no freaking sense. Why did I have to do this to get a company to do what they put in writing they will do?

We had a similar problem at christmas. My mother ordered a set of dishes from Pfaltzgraff -when she received the dish set 2 of 4 had broken mugs...in sealed packages.... but worse the mugs had been glued back together (and very badly at that) and sold as new.

Just like health insurances. Deny, and wait for those that will not fight back and give up. Profit.

The problem here is that Pfaltzgraff makes pretty much the best tableware on the planet ...

Pfaltzgraff seems to use a lot of shady/stupid/weird distributors. I ordered an out of print (if that is the right term) style of dishes from them and when they arrived one of the pieces was broken. I called them and they shipped me a replacement at no cost...for the entire set so I ended up with double the number of dishes -1 bowl.

x1000

When I worked retail people would constantly be returning other dish ware sets after they broke in a month or two, or the finish chipped/peeled off, etc. Never once in the two years I was there did anyone ever bring back anything from Pfaltzgraff.

Looking up reviews I see either 5 stars or 1 star. Seems that most of their stuff is good, but sometimes they make a very fragile set. My complaint isn't the quality of the merchandise, it's the quality of the customer service.

Heh, maybe they contract that out.
