After years of temp jobs and living basically paycheck to paycheck, I decided to actually get into something with actual demand and so I finally got my HTL certification last month. I got hired basically immediately and realized that for the first time in my life after paying for rent, gas, food, and utilities I still have almost two thirds of my money left. They even provide health insurance, so I don't need to pay for that anymore. Now I just have to hope the health care industry doesn't fall apart in the next few years so I can actually make a career out of it. |

I get $23/hour base for 50 hours a week, with time and a half for the last ten hours. Pretty good for something that only requires a bachelor's degree. (even this is not actually required, but you're unlikely to get into the required internship without one) Not going to get rich, but it's pretty decent for age 27. |

Ironically, it's similar to the average starting salary for a Ph.D. in political science (at least for the last year I can find stats, 2008). And, you're probably starting earlier than the typical Ph.D., so you're already ahead of the game (not to mention student loans and such). But, yeah, start a 401K and all that, you'll be happy you did. |
