19 second ping, 0% packet loss, 30 megabits down 5 megabits up. It shouldn't take 4 minutes to buffer 2 minutes of video! And it only happens on some videos, not all.

I think some of their servers in the are overloaded or broken, and the videos on those servers are suffering from the insane stop-start-buffer cycle. It doesn't seem to matter what browser I use, or if I restart the browser.

I've also noticed that it will sometimes not buffer unless it is playing. Which is insanely annoying as it forces you to watch the video with stops and starts. It seems like a recent thing that started a few months ago.

It depends on where that particular video is being served out of.

I hate YouTube for everything mentioned here. Stupid site. Gimme Vimeo any day.

I swear to god, they load faster if you move your mouse some and have them in focus. It's part of the scripting to make sure you're there.

Also, yes, they are slow because they get SLAMMED. YouTube is the second largest search engine on the planet and they're serving the most bandwidth-intense file you possibly can. Don't forget, they also serve 3D, 4k res, etc videos. It's no easy feat, and while I love Vimeo, they aren't even playing the same game.

I'm glad it's not just me.

I get that their server/load failings are due to their popularity, but that doesn't make it any less frustrating to try to use.

Does it seem to anyone else, that the first video is usually fine, but additional videos load slower. I wonder if there isn't some kind of throttling involved.

I seem to have more problems with more obscure/rarely watched video's than i do with very popular ones.

This leads me to think it's more a of a (lack of) caching issue than a 'the server is slammed' issue.

ymmv
