I understand there isn't much this dude (or dudette) can do but I am very frustrated with the entire situation. Background: last year I reported all my CC's stolen but XBox won't let me update CC information from the console so I went out and bought an XBL Pre-paid Card. The Xbox wouldn't accept the card so I've tried keying it on their website on three separate occassions getting the same error over and over until I finally reached out to chat support:

You are now chatting with 'Corey'.
Corey: Hi Patrick
Patrick: Hello
Corey: Thank you for contacting Xbox Customer Support! How are you today?
Patrick: I am fantastic, yourself?
Corey: I am doing great, thanks for asking! I am glad your doing well!
Corey: I see your having an issue with redeeming a prepaid code?
Patrick: Yes, I've tried periodically to redeem for the past two months and keep getting an error to try again later
Corey: Well I know that is time consuming, what error code do you get?
Patrick: To try again later
Patrick: No code
Corey: am more than happy to look into this issue for you, I will do my best to try and get this resolved!
Corey: Are you currently signed in to Xbox.com with the account you have a question about?
Patrick: "An error has occured during the transaction. Please try again later."
Patrick: Yes I am
Corey: reat, it will just take me a few minutes to look into this for you.
Patrick: Sure
Corey: Patrick I think I found what is going on, may I have the 25 digit code please.
Patrick: Sure
Patrick: <XBL Code>
Corey: Thank you let me take a look, and while I am doing this, can you turn the console off and just leave it off
please.
Patrick: Yeah
Corey: Patrick that code is coming up consumed on 5/3/12?
Patrick: Was it actually accepted?
Corey: I need to look at this more to give you an honest answer. Have you been trying to redeem it this long?
Patrick: About two months but every time I get that error message.
Corey: Okay thank you for the information, let me see what else I can find.
Patrick: Thanks
Corey: The current gold that is on the account was a purchase of 12 months from a credit card, that is currently in
decline, I don't see anything in history that even shows a prepaid code redeemed on this account .
Patrick: So how do I redeem it to apply to the account?
Corey: Well the thing is that its been redeemed on an account on 5/3/12. But not on this account.
Patrick: Umm... what?
Corey: The code when I look it up, shows it was redeemed and consumed on 5/3/12 but not on this account.
Patrick: What account does it show it was redeemed on?
Corey: That information I cannot give out Patrick I am sorry, its a security reasons.
Patrick: How is this going to be corrected?
Corey: Do you, still have the receipt from when you purchased it?
Patrick: No, I have the credit card statement but it is not itemized to that level.
Corey: I think you might be able to get that specific information from them, who did you purchase it from? Do you
remember what date?
Patrick: It was purchased from Gamestop
Patrick: on 05/03 ironically enough.
Corey: Let me give you a reference number, and I would go back to gamestop, you can provide them a reference
number they can verify with us that the account hasn't redeemed this code but its been used.
Patrick: So I go in there, say someone ganked the code off the card here is a reference number from Microsoft saying
it wasn't me?
Corey: Correct, advise them to call us and we can provide the information to them.
Patrick: Alright, what is the code and phone number I need to provide?
Corey: Your reference number is .
Corey: This can be provided to an agent as a record of our conversation if you need additional assistance.
Corey: Is there anything else I can help you resolve today?
Corey: Let me get the number for you.
Patrick: My reference number is .?
Corey: I see what happend, let me get it.
Corey: The number is 1-800-4MY-XBOX (1-800-469-9269).
Corey: Your reference number is <reference number>.
Corey: This can be provided to an agent as a record of our conversation if you need additional assistance.
Corey: Is there anything else I can help you resolve today?
Patrick: No that is all, thanks.

Sounds like a Gamestop issue. I'd Butch at them. Also, can you update you credit card info on the website? You mentioned trying to update through the console.

Does this involve bringing you beefy bodyguard, Butch to the Gamestop and threatening them with a beatdown?

I agree it is a Gamestop issue but I wouldn't have even headed over there if Xbox let me update my CC info on the console instead of erroring out mysteriously every time I attempted it. As to updating on the website there is the option but since I already dropped $60 on the pre-paid card...

When it comes to Gamestop, you probably need to do that. Otherwise, I'd say my phone auto corrected "*****".

The last time I had to update payment info for XBL, I did so through the web portal. It wasn't painless, but it did let me add and remove payment types, as long as they weren't actively being used. ("Active", in the case of XBL, being "did you purchase a gold plan and forget to turn off auto-renew?")
