Is waiting for me at the Post Office tomorrow morning.

It was (unsuccessfully, obviously) delivered to my mother's house on Saturday.

The mystery, and reason for this post? The sender's name listed on the little slip is <my last name>.

The safe money is that it's from my Dad... and I have no idea what he wants from me after nearly a decade of nobody even knowing where the hell he is.

Trying not to freak out and mentally construct the most ugly scenarios conceivable in my mind, but it's difficult.

Maybe it's a letter from your future self who is actually in the past and asked it to be held until today.

Or not. Either way let us know, preferably before you go attempting to recover the time machine.

By the way, if you need help with that part...

I was thinking the same thing.

Maybe you have a brother out there that you didn't know about?

Safe bet, the old man is passing on and wants to say something before he goes.

I had a certified show up about 2 years ago for me. Turns out it was from the local police department trying to return some evidence to me from a burglary I had happen to me a couple years prior to that letter...

no complaints about that one lol

Quite possibly. The oddest part, to me, is that most of the reasons to send the letter certified that I can think of make the absence of a certified letter for my brother, as well, quite odd.

I mean, I'm pretty sure he's actually moved *less* times than I have in the intervening decade, and he's renting from friends vs. my 2-year-old house purchase, so I'd assume that I would be the easier to look up and find an actual address.

You are the oldest child? I am sure if it is something like that, there are messages he would like you to pass on.

Oh. Okay, well, it's about money. He's still carrying student loans for the college I couldn't afford to continue after he cut me off... heh.

And more of the twisted phrasing that leads me to believe he's still being lead around by the nose by his paranoid wife, who's basically at the center the conflict between us in the first place. Joy.

Ugh. Dad had to go through something very similar with his own father. My sympathies for shitty situations.

What in the hell is she so paranoid about?

Well, it's easier to demonstrate the effects than answer your question (because the answer is "Who the hell knows?")...

Within approximately a year and a half of meeting my Dad, she'd managed to steer him away from all his friends, his job, his church, and his family. Presumably because they were all "taking sides against him/her" or some such. Commenting on that, supporting my teenaged, but license-less, brother's desire to continue attending our old church, and eventually confronting him about my dissatisfaction with the ability to have a personal relationship with HIM instead of some amalgam entity of him/her, where she replies to emails I send to HIM (nastily, no less), and where the responses I hear when talking to him sound more like they're coming from her... well, that's the source of our estrangement, in a nutshell.

My dad's last wife was like that. None of us were really sad when she died.

Money.

I gather you're the oldest son, which means you get it by default. She's gone through a lot of effort to make sure that you don't take it from her, and in all likelihood, she's gotten you cut out entirely. Alienation of friends and family combined with a change of employment is a textbook gold-digger control play.

This sounds kind of like he's running out, and they are (read: she is) trying to recover any money he might've already given you. From what you've posted, it sounds like the letter basically says, "I've got this outstanding debt that was for your college, and I need you to pay it off." To which I would respond with, "I would've liked a father these past ten years."

I agree...is there a legal obligation for you to pay?

Pretty much, Coro.

And, Kirra, no, there isn't, hence why he's asking and not serving me.
