Post subject: | A gaming rant |
Copying this from my post in a friend's Facebook gaming group as I thought it was worth a more open discussion: Me!!! wrote: Not wanting to dive into the morass that is the Blizzard forums, I wanted to comment here about my experiences with Diablo 3 and the people complaining about it. Thus far, i have little complaint about the game other than my lack of time to play it (Having a 3 yr old and an infant will do that). I grow tired of all the complaining about what people want the game to be and what skills should be nerfed/buffed, drop rates, difficulty levels, blahblahblahblah. WTF. Play the game and enjoy it. (Old school gamer mode switching on) In my day, we didn't have the ability to ***** directly to game maker when they released sucky games (Looking directly at you "Deadly Towers"), nor was the technology even in place for a publisher to do anything about it even if they got wind of the fact that a game sucked. Is this what gamers do now? ***** and whine until the publisher makes a change that they want? Can't they just enjoy the game for what it is and if it turns out to not be as wonderful as they remembered Diablo 2 being, well then just whip out D2 and get back to playing it. Gamers with too much time on their hands seem to have this problem. They finish a game in record time with little time spent actually ENJOYING it. I am still only level 40 in D3 (60 max) on the second of four difficulty levels. Having little time to play it has made me enjoy it in smaller chunks with little need to complain about a skill that has been nerfed from doing 50% damage to only 20%. Call me old school, call me what you will, but I can't stand the perceived entitlement that new school gamers seem to have about playing a game that they don't like compared to what they expected it to be. I am enjoying Diablo 3 greatly and I also plan to enjoy Mass Effect 3 eventually when I find the time. I also don't plan on ***** about the ending of it when I do finally see it. Just going to enjoy the game for what it is and if it isn't, well then I guess I'll just stop playing it. Huh, funny idea, that. Am I one of the few that just tries to enjoy the game as it is, and then just roll with the punches when the patches come out to balance this, or nerf that. As I said before, I am so behind in my gaming that I plan to play some of the games that I have in several years time if my Xbox even lasts that long. There just isn't enough time in my life to play a game, beat it many times over, use different characters, find all the sidequests etc, and formulate an opinion on why one class benefits from this buff while some other class doesn't require the same buff. How in the world to people find such time to make these games such a critical part of their lives? I play a game and completely understand the fact that I just am NOT going to see/experience everything possible in it because of the sheer enormity of them. Hell, I don't think I ever played an Amazon or Assassin in Diablo 2 because the game was engrossing enough with the other characters I used. Mass Effect 1,2,3 multiple playthroughs? You've got to be kidding. I'll probably go to my grave with Assassin's Creed Brotherhood still only half finished. Am I alone on this? |

Are you complaining about people complaining about a game you don't have time to play? |

I'm with you and your friend, Foamy. Play a game for what it is, move on if you don't like it, and shut the **** up. |

Hopwin: No, I don't care that there are other who have the time to play D3 while I don't. The crux of my message is that I am tired of this gaming generation that feels the need to ***** and whine about what they want a game to be instead of just enjoying it for what it is. Wah, Diablo 3 is too hard, make it easier...Not enough rare drops...Character class X is better suited for Inferno than Character class Y and I don't want to play an X. The sense of entitlement these people have is astounding. When a game turns out to be not what they expected, they whine and complain about it hoping for it to magically transform into something they like. Is that what they think their $59.99 entitles them to nowadays? |

Not to mention how many people get their money back these days. AFTER they've beaten the game. It's disgusting. |

I am with you now. So you are complaining that they are complaining about not feeling the game is worth their money? |

... and complaining to the world / game developers demanding compensation or changes to the game itself to make them happy. Yes. |

Can you return video games after you've opened them? I've bought some crap in the past but always chalked the cost of it up to a learning experience. |

Depends on the store. That said, a lot of people buy digital copies now which can definitely be refunded (Blizzard's been doing a lot of that). |

Did you forget the outrage over Zelda II A link to the past? |

What? There's a Zelda II? |

The only outrage I remember is over how long it took to come out. Also I'm temped to slap Elmo for confusing Link to the Past with Adventure of Link. That aside if there was a mass outrage over Adventure, the developers did the only thing they could to fix it: not make those mistakes again. |

Yeah, I remember LoZ 2: the adventures of Link being forever held back. I totally forgot about that. |

There is NO LoZ II. |

Whatever it is called. I really liked it, I understand lots of people didn't but it was the difficulty that made the conquest feel it. I still hate those horse headed things. |

I remember an "A-HA" moment I had with "The Zelda game that shall not be named." After beating the palace boss, you were to place a crystal into the statue to finish the palace. This placing of a crystal immediately filled your XP to the next level, thus granting a skill point to add to either Life, Magic, or Attack. Each of which would eventually max out @ 8. I eventually came to realize that, early in the game, this placing of the crystal would bump me from 33XP to the next level of 50XP and that later in the game (If you skip dropping the crystal in the statue until you have only 6 XP levels left), this same drop would bump you from 5100 XP to 6000 XP and more for the late levels. So by skipping the crystal drop, I saved myself from grinding the last 6 levels. All that was needed was to re-run each of the 6 palaces and drop the crystal to fill right up on that sweet, sweet XP. Too bad there was no shortcut in Dragon Warrior such as this. I can still remember endless wandering around Rimuldar hoping for a Gold Golem. |

I think that part of it is that we have the *option* to ***** and be heard by developers these days. I know I wouldn't be the same kind of gamer I am if DLC weren't an option, and modders couldn't fix the shitty parts of games. Oblivion was a good example. Played on XBox, had my fun, then played it on PC and had a blast. As it turns out, "a blast" is much farther into the "fun" side of the fun versus not fun spectrum than "my fun" is, in terms of things to have whilst playing games. For people inexperienced in coding and mod work (I have barely scratched the surface of C++), it gives the impression that changing or rebalancing games is as simple as shuffling a few numbers around. Or it could be an Internet thing. With an emphasis on multiplayer in damn near every title, it's no surprise people turn into dicks when their e-peen is at stake. Games also cost a ton more to make, and the fun doesn't come from the challenge like it did on SNES and NES. Then there's the sheer scale of today's games. I imagine SNES games were much easier to playtest as well, though I did run into an invincible boss glitch on Demon's Crest once. Now, Re: LoZ II. I actually think I preferred that over the original, but that's because something in sidescrollers resonates with me. I'm going to go hide before the angry mob can dust off their pitchforks and torches. |

Too bad there was no shortcut in Dragon Warrior such as this. I can still remember endless wandering around Rimuldar hoping for a Gold Golem. If you played through AoL again after beating it, when you beat a palace boss (the first one dying in two hits) the crystals still do the same thing. though, at max level, they give you enough to give you an extra life (which was like, 9000 exp or something... I don't remember, it's been 20 years). There was an even cooler trick you could do. If you immediately paused the game after placing a crystal, saved, and exited to the character select screen... that experience was still in the buffer. So if you had a brother who was only like level 2, you could start his character and suddenly he's granted 9000 experience and will gain like 4 or 5 levels. Anyway I, too, did not mind AoL. Sure, it did not have the same gameplay as the original but it was still fun. I have fond memories of my friend and I mapping out the final dungeon on graph paper as well as devising strategies for beating the final boss. It all paid off and to an 11 year-old, that's one hell of a feeling of accomplishment. |
