Especially when they are strong candidates, just not the right candidate.

Several of our hiring manager's approaches? Don't. Don't return phone calls or emails, and they'll eventually get the point and go away.

Yup, one of the reasons why I do. Not updating them is just wrong on so many levels. And it doesn't do your company any favors either about being upstanding or good to work with.

Doesn't make them suck any less.

Yeah, that reminds me of my job search years ago. I caught more than one of them doing this by calling them from a phone I'd never used to call them before, they picked up immediately.
