Vindicarre - Do you believe he is not racist? Do you believe it is an appropriate action for him to refuse to perform his legal duties, in this case issuing a license for two people to marry, solely because of the possibility they may have a child of mixed racial heritage? Do you believe he is making a logical decision? Do you believe he is telling the whole truth about his motivation?

I still believe he is a racist, that his actions in refusing to allow two people to marry based on his belief and not on law, is evidence he is a racist. He may be justifying his way into believing he is not, but he certainly appears to be one to me.

Rori, sometimes its about shining the light of day on a situation to see more clearly and teach others the ins and outs and machinations of those who would return us to a Jim Crow type of society where racism can be hidden under the guise of 'doing whats right for the children.'

I do agree that overruling is a minimum, and the possibility of removing him from office should be on the table.

Racism is not the appropriate term to describe this judge's behavior.

He's not "justifying his way into believeing he is not" based on the available evidence. There's nothing to indicate he thinks either race is superior to the other in any way; that belief is a requirement for racism.

If anything, it appears that he thinks large numbers of other people are racist, and is addressing that in a wildly misguided way.

I would like to thank others for calling Monty out on his insults of an entire region. Monty, get a grip. Racism is every where, it isn't just located in the south.

As for the judge. Pretty stupid fella but I can't find racism from this.

I consider it racism because the basis of his decision is solely that of the race of the two individuals, and as such, is no different than affirmative action programs.

Whether it's racism can be debated, with points on both sides. I think it's rather universally considered to be wrong, however, and that's satisfactory.

This is a blanket "well-poisoning" attack on "the conservatives on the board." The adversarial attitude with everyone else who disagrees with you is the root of a lot of problems you have on this board. Consider this a warning.

Likewise, this is a bit snarky, and sarcastically dredges up past disagreements. Each thread stands alone.

To the contracty. It does not sarcastically dredge up past disagreements, but illustrates the issues with the moderation of this board.

If anything, it is a case of vigilante moderation against the moderators.

And this is public criticism/disagreement with moderation. Take a break, come back tomorrow.

For the record: the reason Montegue's post was ignored for so long is you didn't report it, so we didn't notice it. You instead responded to it in a way that violated forum rules. It wasn't until your post was reported by another person that I read the thread and became aware of Monte's infraction. The moderation doesn't go over these threads with a fine toothed comb. We aren't going to notice everything.

I'd like to point out that apparently, from everything I can find, a justice of the peace is not a judge in Louisiana, considering the webpage for that parish doesn't list this guy as a judge.

I have insufficient evidence to lay a claim of "racist" on the man. I prefer to have proof of things before I disparage people in that manner.

I thought I made my position perfectly clear as far as this question:
Quote:
It is an inappropriate call to make on his part and falls clearly outside his duties, rights, and responsibilities as an officer of the law...

Further, I think he should be removed form his position for his (in)actions.

Micheal wrote:

Yes, his decision is logical. I may not agree with it, but it is definitely logical.

Micheal wrote:

I have no reason to believe otherwise.

You can believe that, but don't delude yourself into thinking that you have any logical reason for that belief.

Monte:

I can't speak for other consevatives on this board, because we don't share a hive mind, but I'd say that I don't have enough information to say that whether or not this judge is a racist.

He's certainly given me enough information, however, to say that he is an idiot, an activist judge, a bad public official, and certainly anything but a small government conservative.

Actually bear with me one second I find this guy and the result comforting. A scant 40 years ago, an eye blink in historical terms this choad would have been speaking with the full weight and support of both the Government and the populace. But in a short generation hop he is subject to ridicule and derision for his ideas!

That is progress, he is the outside voice screaming. Moments like this make me realize how far society has come, not how far it is to go.

No, a justice of the peace is not a judge down here. Simply a lawyer with the ability to sign marriage licenses/marry people.

And he did not attempt to prevent them from getting married, even going so far as to refer them to a colleague who would marry them in the same area.

He simply said *he* would not be the one to marry them.
