For some reason this reminds me of the **** talk that NPCs in Everquest give you when they aggro but then seconds later they die.

Farther,

People said bad things would happen if they integrated blacks and whites in the Military.

People said bad things would happen if they integrated women into the military (in combat units, etc...).

While I'm sure there were incidents related to both of these 'changes', by all accounts, both were successful, and nothing terrible happened.

If a few people decide not to enlist because of the DADT changes, so be it. The military will just make the necessary adjustments and move on.

10 years from now, when we all look back on this, we'll all be asking ourselves what all of the fuss was about.

Note, that I'm speaking from an insiders perspective, having spent 20 years on active duty in the U.S. Air Force.

If a few bigots decide to get out of the military that would be fantastic. Maybe then we could stop kicking good people out because of chronic overmanning...

I didn't care when I was in the Marine Corps if someone I was serving with was gay or lesbian and I don't care now. One of the few things President Obama has done that I agree with. I do care if they can help me crash a door and safely, quickly, and effectively clear a building. As long as they are professional and competent, let them serve. Their sexual orientation is of little relevance.

As for us "sending the poor to war," statistically, it's true that more members of the military come from low to middle income families then from rich families. However, the way that statement is generally used insults my intelligence. Because I was poor growing up does that mean I was unable to make a conscious decision to better my life? I owe a large portion of my success today to my decision to join the military when I was just out of high school.

The way the statement is generally used is to imply, suggest, or explicitly state that Congress and the President view you as expendable because you grew up poor.

Yup.

Your country is run by a bunch of greedy, megalomaniacal boardroom aristocrats, not "the people," and they don't give a **** about you, always remember that. When it comes down to it, to the people in charge, soldiers are just meat for the grinder. Don't give me any of this "ask not" bullshit. You owe your country nothing. Self-sacrifice for patriotism, like self-sacrifice for "God", is a sad waste of good human life. One used to at least be able to say "Soldiers are defending our freedom," but ultimately, when you realize that "Freedom" is becoming a distant memory in the west, and big brother is controlling everything, you question what it is that they were actually defending.

Were I a draft-eligible gay man in the USA, i'd actually be rather upset by the end of DADT. It was an easy way out.

My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est
Pro patria mori.
