I realize that. I'm not advocating that we reduce Iran and Pakistan to 16th-century living simply to intimidate everyone else. Like I said, and have said before, our proper target should have been Afghanistan but we long since missed the boat on that.

However, the fact remains that an empire has to have the barbarians maintaining fear or at least healthy levels of respect. You don't necessarily need to inflict a huge body count to do that; you just need to keep him aware that you can reduce him to impotence, and will do so if he **** around.

Exactly ...

And Iran and Pakistan are actually really good choices at the moment, because it would ire Russian and China enough to legitimate the increased military response and readiness necessary to support that level of empire.

I can't disagree with that, especially since both are lucrative markets for Russian and Chinese weapons sales.

Well ...

There's also the consideration that making Iran and Pakistan (1 overt and 1 not so clandestine enemy) into hard colonies allows us to keep the military and personnel presence necessary to soft colonize Afghanistan and Iraq. And, honestly, with all the empty land, we could certain build all sorts of refining and production facilities.

Glass Tehran and Islamabad and remind the world what an empire actually can do. Export the debt into the colonies and then shed them.

Given the apparent definition the glade members are using for "trolling" recently, I'm thinking the espoused opinion most closely resembling trolling is awarded to you, Doomster.

Not that I agree with that definition, mind you. I don't. It's being used in place of a rejoinder towards what is implied to be a minority or unpopular opinion... It's a cowardly attack in lieu of a thoughtful reply, specifically to imply a thoughtful reply is wasted on whomever it's directed.

Still, when in Rome...I suppose the toga is the uniform of the day, eh?
