Obama: All US troops out of Iraq by end of year
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Friday declared an end to the Iraq war, one of the longest and most divisive conflicts in U.S. history, announcing that all U.S. troops would be withdrawn from the country by year's end.

The president made the announcement at a White House briefing following a private video conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
“As promised the rest of our troops in Iraq will come home by the end of the year. After nearly nine years, the war in Iraq will be over,” Obama said.
"Today I can say that troops in Iraq will be home for the holidays," Obama said.
More than 4,400 American military members have been killed, and another 2,000 wounded since the U.S. invaded Iraq in March 2003.
Obama said the United States will have a "strong and enduring partnership" with Iraq after pullout of troops.
The American withdrawal by the end of 2011 was sealed in a deal between the two countries when George W. Bush was president. Obama declared the end of the combat mission earlier this year. The main sticking point has been legal immunity for any U.S. forces that remain.
Check back for further details on this developing story.

Wait, so ...

Lemme get this straight:

We followed the Bush Administration draw-down table, which has all American soldiers out of Iraq by the end of the year, according to a deal negotiated by Bush, and ...

This is Obama's Victory?

I guess it's ... blame Bush when I win and blame Bush when I lose?

So he's doing the end zone dance for something he had no choice but to do, that was agreed to by his predecessor? Why am I seeing so many wet panties over this on MSNBC?

Crap like this "victory" is exactly what's wrong with blinded political supporters. Don't people recearch the gorram claims their politicians make? FFS type a few words into Google for once you mouth breathers.

My understanding is the pentagon wanted 27k troops remaining but would find a way to make 10k work. They got 3k. Didnt make them happy. Now it's complete withdrawal. We'll see what the military folks have to say.

I suppose any repercussions can just be shrugged off as "Bush's fault".

I would imagine that most are active duty. If so, they go back to their base and go from there.

If they were on active duty, they'll remain on active duty.

If they were Reserve or National Guard, they'll return to whatever civilian job they had prior to deployment (it is illegal to fire a person because they have been mobilized until they've been absent 5 years or something like that; no one ever gets mobilized long enough in a row for it to be a problem)

If their civilian employer no longer exists or they had no job, they need to look for a job like everyone else.

My understanding is that Iraq wanted to be allowed to prosecute American soldiers in Iraqi courts; since that's not really likely to result in anything like a fair trial (simply because almost no one anywhere in the world gives enough protections to the defendant by our standards, even if we could count on Iraqis to be fair or impartial) we said Adios.

I have quite a few students and classmates who are using the GI bill to get an engineering degree. One of them was an electrician on an aircraft carrier, and another has gone back into the reserves and currently works as a civil engineer in the Air Force. I have a friend who's recently returned stateside after her third tour to finish up the last year of her contract. She's been a mechanic in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Troops returning from war zones are not shlumps with no job skills. They have valuable skills that make them desirable to employers.

Not all. If you worked in a field like being an electrician, or a network specialist, or medical, or mechanic (of which there are plenty), yes. Those troops that are in more military specific areas like "howitzer crewman" or "tank crewman" are not really bringing back terribly useful civilian job skills, although they will still usually have better prospects than someone without service that is otherwise in a similar situation.

NBC was fun but damn I should have chosen a medical field. We were entirely like Pauly shore in that crap movie "in the army now" (think that was it)

I would agree with that. I was more concerned with the idea of there not being any positions available for them, skilled or not.

Carpentry would help with all the stuff I gotta do in the garage, shed, and with the garden fence.

Go to Afghanistan. Coming home doesn't mean your enlistment stops, Lady K.
