Poor grammar and incorrect spelling are actually errors whereas using "$25 words" is not.

Communicating in such a way that your audience cannot understand you is an error.

In general, I agree with that statement. However, you can see the post I made in this thread. I'm fairly certain it addresses the situation adequately. But, since we're on the subject, most of the posters here are hostile to me establishing a baseline of familiarity with the subjects on which publish my material. In fact, most of you refuse to answer the baseline questions; rather, you simply say spit it out and stop treating us like we're stupid.

So, there's a nifty catch-22 at work. I can either explain what I'm thinking or type what I'm thinking; and in both cases, you guys hold it against me.

Yes, yes, it's all very tragic. Don't be a victim, dude. Just try to be more clear. I'm a fairly intelligent individual, and I can understand you. But you do tend to dance around a statement from time to time.

In that case, define "your audience."

With this particular post, my audience is you.

I'm just saying, if you believe that the author/orator must write to their audience, then in every case one must define their audience. Khross is correct that most people here either are, or claim to be, smart. Therefore, using big words is appropriate. It isn't his fault if his audience's ego forces them to misrepresent their intelligence or knowledge level, causing him to "speak to" his audience on false pretenses.

Lack of specialized knowledge of the vocabulary in one particular area of expertise is NOT generally indicative of a general deficiency.

I agree, lack of knowledge about jargon is not indicative of a general deficiency. I've never seen Khross use jargon, though, so the point is moot.

Hardly. I know individuals who are highly accomplished mathematicians who have no vocabulary skills to speak of, and brilliant writers who can barely do basic mathematics. Khross excels at vocabulary and appears to enjoy using it to add the appearance of authenticity to sometimes ill-conceived arguments.

So what if he does? It's somehow more of a problem if Khross makes an ill-conceived argument than if anyone else does because he uses big words?

There would be no need for Khross to add the "appearance of authenticity" to his arguments - they're always authentic (except that one time he played Devil's Advocate for kicks), multisyllabic words, or not.

Really, people should only use two-bit words when they know what they mean, because their ignorance will always be pointed out, and their subterfuge exposed.

I'm curious as to what you think these ill-conceived arguments are, TheRiov. Honestly, you do little more than troll and stroke your own ego without adding any substantive arguments to any threads. Oh, wait, I'm sorry. I probably should not have returned your ad hominem in kind; that's a tu quoque fallacy if you need to check.

Perhaps, but if your mathematician friend(s) with no writing ability represents themself as able to understand complex language, they shouldn't be surprised if people speak in complex language to them. Again, it comes down to the audience misrepresenting their capacities (purposefully or inadvertently).

To be perfectly fair I think he's played devil's advocate more than once.

Playing the Devil's Advocate is generally a useful tool in any discussion. My positions are pretty well established on most things. I dislike authority but recognize the need for a very tightly controlled and minimalist government. I am skeptical of the IPCC Consensus on anthropogenic climate change. I disagree with the claims dominant among some sectors of this forum on economics and policy making. And, despite all appearances of misanthropy, I suspect I have more faith in humanity than almost every other poster here.

Apparently I'm a troll if I refuse to get involved in most of the petty bickering that occurs in hellfire and only offer the occasional comment when someone makes an outrageous claim or there is a topic I care about.

And if you will refer to the previous couple of posts on the subject by me, you'll find that I included a number of people in that category (myself included), so I hardly think it could be regarded as an ad hominem attack.

But you know, I'm just here to stroke my own ego. Clearly the way to do that is run myself down.

Misanthropy is a virtue! I have nothing but scorn for humanity when taken as a whole. :P
