Here's more:
Thesaurus.com wrote:
Main Entry: insolvent
Part of Speech: adjective
Definition: financially ruined
Synonyms: bankrupt, broke*, broken, busted, failed, foreclosed, in Chapter 11, in Chapter 13, in receivership, in the red, indebted, lost, on the rocks, out of money, strapped, taken to the cleaners, unbalanced, undone, wiped out
Antonyms: moneyed, rich, solvent, wealthy
* = informal/non-formal usage
Main Entry: bankrupt
Part of Speech: adjective
Definition: unable to pay debts
Synonyms: broke, depleted, destitute, exhausted, failed, impoverished, in Chapter 11, insolvent , lacking, lost, out of business, ruined, spent, tapped out
Antonyms: rich, solvent, wealthy

They are considered to be synonymous case closed. Yet, you chose to argue the point by using "in the real world"...

Hate to chime in here... but really? You're using a list of synonyms to support your argument? Your same list of synonyms says that bankruptcy is synonymous with "destitute."

Using your logic, bankruptcy = destitute.
Therefore, if you say the US is bankrupt, you must also be saying that the US is destitute.
Since the United States has piles of gold and plenty of food and vast amounts of resources, it's clearly not "destitute."
Therefore, the United States is also not bankrupt.

Seeing as I entered the discussion because of this statement:

By this logic, virtually everyone with a mortgage is bankrupt.

Anyone who's liabilities out-stripe their assets is, in fact, bankrupt.

This is wrong. You're talking about insolvency.

And presented this:

Merriam Webster wrote:
1bank·rupt noun \ˈbaŋk-(ˌ)rəpt\
Definition of BANKRUPT
1
a : a person who has done any of the acts that by law entitle creditors to have his or her estate administered for their benefit
b : a person judicially declared subject to having his or her estate administered under the bankrupt laws for the benefit of creditors
c : a person who becomes insolvent
2
: a person who is completely lacking in a particular desirable quality or attribute <a moral bankrupt>

Providing a list of synonyms to show it wasn't an anomaly would be reasonable. To understand why something is used I'd imagine the rest of the conversation would be needed for context.

If "destitute" had the same attributions (being listed in a definition for bankrupt, for one) as insolvent then yes, one might make the conclusion that I was using such logic. As it stands, I am not. My logic is that insolvent and bankrupt are so similar as to render the statement Arathain made lacking in the distinction he believed it held.

Merriam Webster wrote:
in·sol·vent adj \(ˌ)in-ˈsäl-vənt, -ˈsȯl-\
Definition of INSOLVENT
1
a (1) : unable to pay debts as they fall due in the usual course of business (2) : having liabilities in excess of a reasonable market value of assets held
b : insufficient to pay all debts <an insolvent estate>
c : not up to a normal standard or complement : impoverished
2
: relating to or for the relief of insolvents
— insolvent noun

I'm sure Arathain would agree if he were able to step back and look at his argument as well as the definitions provided.

Holy Christ, man. You are clearly not reading my posts. You are STILL attributing arguments to me that I am not making. Why are you wasting my time?

I thought that was Barack's job, right along with healing the earth and controlling the oceans.

The House passed Boehners compromise...

I found this little tidbit interesting..

emphasis mine...

Friday's vote was a critical test of Boehner's control over his tea party-infused GOP caucus. The speaker was forced to quell a right-wing revolt over the measure after a number of members complained that it doesn't do enough to shrink the size of government and stem the tide of Washington's red ink

Boehner, R-Ohio, managed to sway several of those members by including a provision requiring congressional passage of a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution before the debt ceiling can be extended through the end of 2012.

I have faith in my Rep as an individual person -not just some guy with an R after his name- to do the right thing. If he ever does anything to change that I'll fire him. A lot of the freshman this year echo his point of view. The Speaker seems to be saying a lot of the right things and showing backbone, but there is a reason they say "Bay-ner is name, Boner is what he does." My new Senator hasn't given me any reason to distrust him yet. And well that other Senator of mine is an out of touch, dirt bag, Obama knob slobberer based on his actions and record, not the D after his name.

Bottom line is at the moment many signs point to the notion that Republicans have found the key to the drawer where they had locked their spines and conscience away for the last decade.

AHA!
