Yeah just let's put them all over the place. Whoever thought these things were a good idea in the first place?

I have to say if my son and his dog were hit by a cyanide bomb set 350 yards from my house by the F-ing local Fed department, you might read about me in the paper.

Normally I'd criticize a statement like this but in this case... yeah... can't say I disagree.

Holy ****! What the **** hell are people thinking with this kind of ****?! Seriously - who could possibly have thought setting cyanide booby traps in public places was a good idea?

I got the impression from another article that this has been going on for decades. It sounds like the sort of thing that would have seemed like a great idea in the 1950s, but I'm not entirely sure. If so, I'm amazed how little known they've been until now.

This is the scary part. How is it the public has never been informed of these devices? I'd like to know who authorized installing them on private property without notifying the owner of the property.

Well, it doesn't seem like they've made any effort to hide them. Apparently this is far from the first such incident and they put them in areas near private property where people are bound to discover them. It's almost as shocking that no one has made a stink over them before as that they exist in the first place. I'd never even heard of them before this incident.

It could have been, but I haven't seen any evidence that it was placed on private property without the owner knowing. 350 yards from my front door is off the property. That doesn't really make it better, but... yeah.

Technically that's right, but by the same token placing it 350 yards from a home with kids and a dog in a rural setting where kids and dogs tend to run around all over is still **** negligent as far as I'm concerned.

Wiki has some history and usage information about these devices. It also explains how they work.

Apparently, that have been in use in various forms for a long time. Wiki cites three cases of humans or pets being killed or injured.

I find it absurd that an entity responsible for the protection of wildlife, including endangered species, would use a device that kills indiscriminately.

What's interesting is that I had a pathology exam question on Monday with exactly this kind of scenario, two dead people and multiple dead animals. The answer was to put on oxygen masks due to environmental hazard.

I almost picked the ritual suicide answer choice just to be that guy.

Great. Again, though, it doesn't mean this one was on private land, or if it was that the owner wasn't notified. All I saw was that the guy living 350 feet away wasn't notified.

Again, it doesn't make it better, just saying that there's no evidence they are planting these on private property without permission.

I would hazard a guess that the only 'private' property these would be placed on would be timber plots owned by logging companies, etc...

Placing these things anywhere is a ridiculous practice. I get the need to cull predators. The problem is this thing isn't selective. It will kill whatever comes up and nibbles on it.

When the local first responders don't even know they are there and what they do/contain, that's a problem. It slows down an appropriate response to exposure.

I get culling predators. But doing so with methods that kill anything that contacts it...
