The year I was a freshment, the catalog was changed to 128 hours, which averaged 16 hours a semester exactly. Basically, the catalog wasn't really changed, they just restructured several of the courses to be worth less credits (labs particularly) in order to require you to pay for "less" credits to graduate.

However, they didn't significantly reduce the number of credits to graduate, so you still paid for 128 ... there was just more courses required.

Fascinating. Last I checked, the UMSL and Wash U requirements for Mechanical and Electrical were 139 and 127, respectively. Although restructuring to make courses worth less would certainly explain it. I know Rolla only gives 4 credits for the 5-hour calculus courses.

Our Basic Curriculum is ...

Core:
9 Hours of Math (If you CLEP or AP out of Calculus 1, you still need 9 Classroom Hours of Math, so you end up with Calc 2, Calc 3, and one other (usually Differential Equations))
12 Hours of Science (9 in a single discipline, one class over 300/3000 Level)
4 Hours of Science Labs (in the same discipline as your 9)
6 Hours of Rhetoric and Composition (English 101 and 102)
9 Hours of Literature (American, British, and World)
9 Hours of Political Science
9 Hours of History
3 Hours of Speech and Communication
6 Hours of Economics
12 Hours of Philosophy (Intro, Logic and Rhetoric, 2 Elective)
12 Hours in a Single Language (3 Hours above 300/3000) plus a Language Competency Exam
21 Hours in a Single Discipline above 300/3000 (6 Hours required above 400/4000 Level)

Then you have your Major:
36 Hours Mandatory to Major (21 Hours must be above 400/4000 Level)
15 Hours of Electives in Major Field of Study (9 Hours must be above 400/4000 Level)

I've always disagreed with the idea that it is the job of a system of higher learning to attempt to force any person to be well-rounded. They either will be or won't be on their own, the job of higher learnign is to prepare someone for the skillset they need for future employment, attempting to force requirements onto individuals simply causes them to resent such force and move further away from being well-rounded in their adult life.

A required class each semester for the 4 years of the undergrad degree was scheduled from 1:30 to 5:30 MWF (12 hours of actual class time, real time was 2x to 4x that, depending on week), yet the class was only worth 6 hours.

Of the 148 hours required for graduation (146 if you got a BA instead of a BS), only 40 or so were set aside for electives or general requirements. For freshman, 9 hours at least of the both semesters were dedicated toward requirements for the major. I could not fathom taking the general requirements for the University where Khross teaches, combined with the 100+ hours of major requirements for my degree, and trying to complete that in 4 years.. that averages to 27 hours a semester, or 20 hours for Fall and Spring semesters while maxing out the allowed hours at 18 per summer (3 summers to graduate on time).

What degree is that?
