I highly doubt it'll pass though... but we'll see, lots of "think of the children" people here too.

Apparently you have a lot of "think of the women with small breasts" people, too. ("But, no! Don't think of them like that!")

Ars Technica, that's who! I like how it's not just a kangaroo with a monocle; it's a kangaroo with a monocle and a googly-eye.

Heh. "Googly eyes" is a funny phrase. Just say it. I wonder if Google has ever done a googly-eye Google banner. They totally should. Everything is better with googly eyes.

...

Holy crap. Best. Site. Ever.

I think it would be funny if Google goes out of business after every government starts filtering. Or they'd have to change their policies. The Internet is mostly lawless like the Old West, since it's so new, but I doubt this will last.

Google already filters results in several countries with no problem because those governments are democratic and it is the will of the people. China is a dictatorship/oligarcharchy that does not act at the behest of the governed.

That doesn't make any sense. China does act at the behest of the governed. This is because the governed do not revolt.

This is true up to a point. The governed don't revolt because the oppressiveness of the government has not exceeded the tolerance of a large enough portion of the population.

The government is allowed to continue governing them because the cost-benefit ratio of removing them is not favorable in the estimate of a large enoughsegment of the population. They do not govern at the behest of the governed; the governed are not the ones selecting them or telling them what to do.

The fact that there is stability in China means that the government is mostly doing what the people want.

Or their people are too terrified to revolt, and just go along to get along...

People in America are also too terrified to revolt...

But actually most people in China just want to make money and have technology and live stable lives.

It means no such thing. It means only that the government is not creating a situation where a sufficent number of people find it advantageous to revolt.

Just because a government (or anyone else for that matter) is not doing what people want does not mean that they will necessarily consider fighting a better alternative.

In prisons, the inmates are rarely content with their lot, and would prefer things be done differently. Prison riots do not occur on a daily basis, however, because for the most part inmates realize that revolt is a worse alternative than what they must put up with.

People in America are, with the exception of a few fringe elements, not concerned with revolt, so terror doesn't enter into it.

Obviously. That does not mean they are necessarily happy with their government, however. Some are. Others are not.

In any case, you're just pulling what you think people in China think out of your *** and presenting it as the way things are.

Except for a couple of major cities, the majority of chinese are living in rural communities where education beyond primary is considered a miracle... because a lot of the peasants are brought up in such horrid conditions and without outside contact, they believe that this is as life should be. How could those people revolt when they do not even understand the concept?

Those living in the major cities are still a minority, however are well educated and are given a mostly free life. If you do not go and commit crimes or become vocal in your dissent, you will be left alone to live your life. These people will not revolt because of what DE said.

Also remember people disappear in China all the time... there's just too many of them to cover. That and the fact if you had money, any life could be bought... with power like that, why would the rich revolt?

Those that will consider revolting would be those lower classes who live in the city with a good education. They are chained to their desk for minimum wage, paying off properties they could not afford. Unfortunately these are the minorities of minorities, and thus even if revolted would just disappear. And they know this.
