NEWTOWN, Conn. (CBSNewYork) – Twenty-seven people are dead including 14 children after a gunman opened fire at an elementary school in Newtown, CBS News reports.

Officials say the gunman was also killed and apparently had two guns. It happened around 9:40 a.m. Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

At least three people were injured, two children and an adult. All three were taken to Danbury Hospital. Their conditions are not known.

An 8-year-old student told CBS 2′s Lou Young he was on his way to the school’s office when he saw the gunman.

“I saw some of the bullets going down the hall and then a teacher pulled me into her classroom,” he said.

Police believe there may be a second gunman and are looking for a red or maroon van with its back window blown out, 1010 WINS’ Al Jones reported. Two guns have reportedly been recovered.


The district has been placed on lockdown. Schools in surrounding areas are also on lockdown.

Danbury Hospital spokesperson Diane Burke told CBS 2 that the hospital is also on lockdown as a precautionary measure. No one is being allowed out of the hospital and other than emergencies, no one is being allowed in, she said.

Lisa Bailey, a Newtown resident with three children in Newtown schools, told CBSNewYork.com, “Newtown is a quiet town. I’d never expect this to happen here. It’s so scary. Your kids are not safe anywhere.”

Students were taken to a nearby firehouse where they are being reunited with their parents. Afternoon kindergarten has been cancelled and there will be no mid-day bus runs, according to the district’s website.

What a **** coward. I hope the media never ever releases his name, for he is not worthy of being remembered as a human being.

The dead shooter's mom was a kindergarten teacher at the school and his father was found dead in New Jersey. Apparently he shot her and her entire kindergarten class.

Is this confirmed? I just heard a newsy speculating that shooting might have been the son on one of the faculty at the school?

It's hard to believe you could find two people deranged enough to do something like this together....

A few weeks ago, Michael pulled a knife and threatened to kill me and then himself after I asked him to return his overdue library books. His 7 and 9 year old siblings knew the safety plan—they ran to the car and locked the doors before I even asked them to. I managed to get the knife from Michael, then methodically collected all the sharp objects in the house into a single Tupperware container that now travels with me. Through it all, he continued to scream insults at me and threaten to kill or hurt me.

I am sharing this story because I am Adam Lanza’s mother. I am Dylan Klebold’s and Eric Harris’s mother. I am Jason Holmes’s mother. I am Jared Loughner’s mother. I am Seung-Hui Cho’s mother. And these boys—and their mothers—need help. In the wake of another horrific national tragedy, it’s easy to talk about guns. But it’s time to talk about mental illness.

Of course contrast this woman to Lanza's mother who had firearms in the house. I read somewhere she taught him to use them too, but I dont know if that's been verified. I wonder if she was afraid of him and that's why she had the guns.
