Incidentally, I suspect reports made by DFK in Heckfire were deleted and a warning issued to DFK precisely because it was DFK. You see, DFK also had the gall to question Dashel, and well, that's just how much personal integrity Dashel has.

Then I think you'd be wrong. I was the first to report a post in Heckfire in the thread mentioned, and as far as I know I was the first to question Dash on his post in response.

I did so because of DFK!'s "I don't appreciate the insult." That was the first of several accusations that he was insulted and demands for retractions because he imagined I challenged his ethics. I figured it better to "nip it in the bud" so I called for a decision and would have accepted any warning (not necessarily without question, but still). It was HeckFire, and I'm not looking to change the rules no matter what I think of them*.

Several "internet discussion forum trump cards" were played in that thread. There was the "last word" trump card where repetition is used, several fallacious argument trump cards were used and then MY favorite, the "You're insulting me! MOM... er... MODERATOR!!!!" one where you attempt to drive away your opponent by gaming the rules with bullshit claims of being insulted.

I can deal with all in kind. I respect folks here - I don't think it's stooping to play the same game folks here play. I was playing by the rules, making an attempt to remain civil, and as far as I'm concerned, DFK! was, too. His rancor was apparently bottled up 'till his post in this thread. SO, the worst that happened was that the design of the dual discussion forums* worked as advertised.

I think the difference is, I don't expect the mods to agree with me, and I don't take it personally. If I spammed the "report post" button I'm thinking the result would have been the same for me as it was for DFK!.

* I'm not in favor of moderation. I'd rather practice self-dentistry. Just sayin'.

I really don't think the latter is necessary.

On the contrary, I think you just made the best possible argument in favor of it.

I guess you're not a fan of RD. :(

Nah, I suspect DE's tongue was firmly in his cheek there. (Though I'm sure there have been a few threads where he at least felt like saying something similar to me!)

We have a supposed zero-tolerance subforum that isn't moderated because Dash can't be assed to do so. He sure has the time to delete reports and issue warnings to the person who made the report, though. If the zero-tolerance subforum isn't going to be moderated, and is supposed to serve exactly the same purpose as Hellfire, only with more civility, then why does it need to exist? It's a second link to Hellfire, only the mod staff is lying to us about what rules will be enforced there. At least with Hellfire, they're upfront and honest about the fact that they aren't going to do their jobs. The other subforums don't require moderation, so that means the only real purpose for Heckfire is so that we all think the mods have a reason to exist. In a community of equals, Heckfire serves as a dubious justification to make a few people special voices of authority.

Not that I know what the point of that is, but hey, if you're going to post chatlogs that aren't yours, you may as well post the whole log.

(2:38:11 PM) DFK: people need to use the report button more
(2:38:35 PM) Corolinth: Hm?
(2:41:10 PM) DFK: well, the moderation has all basically taken the stance of "only responding to reports"
(2:41:15 PM) DFK: rather than being proactive
(2:41:31 PM) DFK: dash wants it that way (in so many words), and we all are fine with it
(2:41:37 PM) DFK: but nobody reports anything lately
(2:41:59 PM) DFK: so hellfire went from reasonable discourse with a few off-hand unpleasantries to constant **** cesspool-ification..... again
(2:42:10 PM) DFK: if i were a fascist i'd just start booting people
(2:43:03 PM) DFK: if i could access photobucket from work, i think i'd just copy the "!" report icon, and then link it all the freaking time
(2:43:10 PM) DFK: implying that that is the appropriate response
(2:43:49 PM) Corolinth: I could maybe get a copy of the picture hosted somewhere.
(2:47:00 PM) DFK: my work is sensitive about off-site storage for any reason
(2:47:05 PM) DFK: yet forums = ok
(2:47:21 PM) DFK: its just because we're so heavily regulated in regards to certain privacy info
(2:47:25 PM) DFK: they don't want to risk leaks
(2:47:48 PM) DFK: which is annoying, because it implies distrust.... on the other hand, many people are stupid and might put something out there without malicious intent
(2:48:00 PM) Corolinth: It's the stupid element.
(2:48:13 PM) DFK: the point is, about every 4th post i read should have the "!" follow it
(2:48:18 PM) DFK: on both sides
(2:50:20 PM) Corolinth: Do you know why nobody uses the report feature?
(2:50:33 PM) DFK: because monty is still here
(2:50:42 PM) DFK: causing them to lose faith in the moderation
(2:50:44 PM) Corolinth: I was going to say "Because Hellfire hasn't gotten any better"
(2:50:46 PM) Corolinth: Right.
(2:50:52 PM) Corolinth: All reporting has done is gotten people warned.
(2:50:57 PM) DFK: right
(2:51:00 PM) Corolinth: Monty is still here.
(2:51:02 PM) DFK: and what's.... ironic
(2:51:10 PM) DFK: is that he was 1 report away from a 30 day ban
(2:51:19 PM) DFK: and then... the reports dried up
(2:51:21 PM) DFK: it was weird
(2:51:32 PM) Corolinth: That's because you wouldn't **** do anything.
(2:51:32 PM) DFK: like the gods conspired to leave us with his small-mindedness
(2:51:44 PM) DFK: the timing is what i found bizarre
(2:51:57 PM) Corolinth: Mods weren't the answer to anything. All having moderation did was get us saddled with a bunch of bullshit rules for someone like Monty to abuse.
(2:52:16 PM) Corolinth: We didn't need mods, we just needed someone to ban Monty.
(2:52:24 PM) Corolinth: Mods arose out of some desire to be fair and equitable.
(2:52:34 PM) DFK: i'll grant you that
(2:52:36 PM) Corolinth: But the Glade isn't a government or a society.
(2:52:44 PM) Corolinth: It's a group of acquaintences.
(2:52:48 PM) DFK: indeed
(2:52:57 PM) Corolinth: It's supposedly a group of friends, although that's using the word loosely.
(2:53:01 PM) DFK: quite
(2:53:09 PM) Corolinth: Most of us decided we can't stand Monty.
(2:53:19 PM) Corolinth: It doesn't have to be fair and equitable. We can't **** stand him.
(2:54:07 PM) Corolinth: It's like the guy who just bailed on our Sunday night gaming group. He brings nothing to the games. He just sits there and waits to roll dice. He has no input on what type of games he'd like to play.
(2:54:40 PM) Corolinth: When he decides to play again, I'm not letting him back in my game. Period. One of the other guys agreed.
(2:55:04 PM) Corolinth: He didn't really break any rules that we busted him for. We just don't feel like having him back.
(3:00:57 PM) DFK: good analogy
(3:01:02 PM) DFK: make it to dash
(3:01:07 PM) DFK: i've advocated the boot since the new edition
(3:01:14 PM) DFK: and advocated against having Lex back
(3:01:53 PM) DFK: i don't like having people on a discussion forum who not only bring nothing to the table, but serve to undermine any feeling of community
(3:01:58 PM) DFK: on the other hand, it isn't my forum
(3:03:59 PM) DFK: :)
(3:06:03 PM) Corolinth: Done.
(3:07:44 PM) DFK: it really has escalated in the last couple weeks i think though
(3:07:57 PM) DFK: either monty is done with his national tour, or the mass. thing knocked him over the edge
(3:10:08 PM) DFK: imo
(3:15:54 PM) Corolinth: Probably both.
(3:16:26 PM) DFK: indeed

So which is it? We dont need mods or bullshit rules to hide behind, we just need Monty out, or Dash cant be assed to give us bullshit rules and moderate.

Should I mention Monty was banned and hasnt been back? Not sure if you knew.

I'd be comfortable with no moderation, and just using the ban hammer for **** bags.

The problem has been spelled out for you explicitly. You're just too stupid to read, or else intentionally being a cockstain.

See, this is why I don't really see the existence of an unmoderated forum as a good thing.

If there weren't an ignore function I'd agree with you. As it is, authority serves a purpose, if nothing else as a force to rail against.

People NEED "the man", for without him, they'd be forced to realize that the only one who can keep us down is ourselves.

Without moderation, folks would self moderate via ignore. At that point, there are folks who ALL would end up ignoring. Those folks would either end up moderating themselves in an effort to be part of the community or would troll themselves out of existence.

We banned Monte just like you said boss, didnt I do good? =/

I'm enjoying this too much. Good thing I saved that email, I thought I was going crazy since I recalled you advocating no moderation but couldnt find it. STFU Coro you're not fooling me with this nonsense, I've seen it too much by better than you. How old are you that you're still playing the emo kid fighting the man, trying desperately to be edgy with retarded insults to me?

Anyway, I've had my fun, point made. Hopefully the WoW servers are up. Bygones for me, continue if you wish.

Just as a clarification, let's not pretend you had anything to do with banning Monte, Dash.

Moderation always hampers discussion.

That being said we don't need a 7 page thread proving why.

For a second, I though Dash got so fed up with the ***** that he just made everyone a moderator. That would be...uh, interesting.

I see no problem with people ignoring trouble commentators until no one sees the comments.
