No, that was the guy who got the temporary ban.

Beryllin requested that he be permanently banned. He decided to be a pain until his request was honored. He was obviously unhappy with the Glade and could not remain in control of himself to just not visit the Glade. After a lot of discussion, the management decided to honor his request.

Hush, Micheal. People want to hold on to their mistaken beliefs! It's no fair to inject truth into the conversation!

Some of us may not have known. It's news to me! :(

Well, this thread just convinced me to take my leave of the board.

I'll say this.

Bery had his issues and well, he went off the reservation...but this much is true, whenever these Westboro idiots were brought up, he denounced them every time that I know of. I don't see the reasoning in lumping him in with them now.

Did my wife hack your account or something?

For the record, this isn't part of the "bash Bery now that he's gone" fest. I just have no sympathy for "This place sucks, I'm leaving" posts.

Spare us the drama. That's right up there with a poll to see if you all want me to stay. ... like I'd ever put THAT up to a vote!

Absolutely.

I will say, though, that this has been a great example of how effective using broad stroke stereotypes is in our society. If you have very few data points to work with, going from "Evangelical Christian" to "Fred Phelps psycho" is an easy leap to make for more people than one would logically expect. That's why the whole "Random Conservative" or "Small Government Tea Partier" to "Racist" or "Gun Wielding Nutjob" gains traction when it's thrown around.

For the record, I don't consider Bery to be on par with these nuts but that was a hilarious line and credit is deserved.

I don't think anyone who responded to the line, or DFK (tangentially, as I don't think that's what he was getting at) for that matter, does, but it still illustrates how close things are in our little, emotion-driven, brains when we don't have much information about "the other".

I wasn't, actually.

Mainly, I was attempting to stir up conversation, because I figured the odds of any real conversation in a thread on a board (that originated as a gaming board) about religious protestors hating on comics was effectively nil. Call it a troll post for that if you like, but here we are, pages later actually discussion conflation of extremists with individuals.

Ahhh, so I was merely a pawn in your grand scheme...

you know... I will admit: initially I thought the statement meant that Bery was going to be attending ComiCon: it took a while for me to piece together the baptist/protest connection.

I am about to pull off a "I can't believe I am **** doing this" hat trick.

1) Bery is not here. It is cowardly to attack him. Doing so is the equivalent of petty high school student snickering behind someone's back. It's weaksauce. It's lame.

2) Bery was always intensely critical of the WBC, he and Coren both had nothing but ill things to say about that wretched group of hate mongers.

3) TheRiov and I agree.

Westburo gets owned by Comic Con
Quote:
Put one in the win column for fandom! Members of the Westboro Baptist Church—best known for picketing the funerals of American servicemen killed overseas—showed up at Comic-Con just as they said they would to protest the event because they wanted to send a message that we've all "turned comic book characters into idols." But Comic-Con rallied to send its OWN message.

Church members had intended to hold their protest for an hour, but in the face of 150 to 200 counter-protesting, costumed fans carrying signs that read everything from "Odin is God" to "God loves Gay Robin," they gave up early. By the time Blastr arrived, the handful of Comic-Con haters were already packing up and walking away with the police presence that outnumbered them, which you can see below at the 24-second mark.

The year after that... WBC will be sitting with Justin Bieber in North Korea.

you realize... if the nerds can organize like this: counter protests should become the norm to combat the WBC shenanigans.

If they protested goat.se, I might join them for that though. Just that once. "Some God hates disgusting **** on the internet!" "Thank God for buffer overflows!"

Yes, but the way in which they combated it most groups probably wont get behind. The Nerd crowd created messages offensive to the Westboro groups (props, but still I doubt you'll find counter-protestors with sacreligious messages at funerals)
