Ok, for the record, I couldn't care less about the issue itself, but I do find the reaction hilarious.

I never saw "outrage" but there was a lot of disagreement with the decision to separate them, and some folks were pointing to this as evidence that homosexuality is natural, etc.

The problem with drawing a comparison, is that you, well, validate the comparison.

Homosexuality can be tempered by societal pressure to be with someone of the opposite sex, but the desires would not go away. I think most people are capable of being sexual with nearly anyone else, although their degree of desire varies.

There's a great deal of "gay for the stay" that goes on in prisons, among men and women. There's plenty of "gay for pay" among porn workers as well, and the fact that the men can get hard enough to perform indicates in both cases that the possibility of sex can definitely turn a fairly minor same-sex attraction into enough arousal to get it on.

Talya overstates it a bit, not everyone has enough same-sex attraction that they'd get it on with the same sex, but the fact is that a minor level of same-sex attraction is much more widespread than most people credit, and a minor level of opposite-sex attraction is quite prevalent amongst gay people.
