I'm at the most Southwestern point of the continental US and I'm not convinced that it's really a problem at all.
The border south of San Diego is rather tight at the moment. South of Tucson, it's porous like you wouldn't believe. To add to that, the coyotes (not the animal kind) sit on mountain tops, usually with rifles, spotting for the illegals running drugs into the country. It's even worse in the areas where the indian reservation touches the border because at best the indians don't give crap and at worst are actively helping them through. There's some state parks that BLM tell people to not even go into anymore because it's unsafe due to smugglers. And while the smugglers may be the only real threat, the mules (IA's carrying their drugs) are complicit in it. I won't even get started on the huge amounts of trash or the panty trees.
The Napster is full of crap. The border is anything but secure.
