Anyway, basically, PM Erdogan's government has a history of corruption and suppression of dissent, but he's been able to keep a lid on opposition thanks to solid economic growth and a relatively broad political coalition. The current mess started as an ordinary protest against one of Erdogan's pet projects that involved bulldozing a popular park, but when the cops cracked down hard and the protestors refused to yield, it popped the lid off the widespread discontent that's been bubbling under the surface for years, leading to general anti-government protests and clashes with riot cops around the country. |

Up until recently, Erdogan has actually had the tacit support (albeit muted and ambivalent) of secular, liberal reformers because his government is a democratically-elected counterweight to the politically powerful and arguably even more repressive military. It's true that Erdogan's government has enacted various religion-based laws that are undeniably anti-freedom, and some of the opposition is in response to that, but much of the opposition is also motivated by Erdogan's more generalized silencing of political opposition, government corruption, abusive police and military tactics, etc. Moreover, the "Muslims being angry" (i.e. the protesters) are for the most part protesting on secular, not religious grounds, including opposition to Islamist policies. |

Whatever, man. All you're doing now is explaining why Muslims are angry and/or oppressive. I'm sure they are all very legitimate reasons. The point is, though, that Muslims are always friggin angry. I think it's part of their scripture. Step 1: Allah. Step 2: Something about head scarves. Step 3: Be angry. |

Also, the French grew out of their adolescent decapitation temper tantrum. Muslims are still going around beheading everything. |

One of our allies has gone and upset heir citizens enough that they are having a revolution. Since hey are an ally we cannot admit that so they are having some unrest and a little street violence. Check Al-Jazeera for their angle on the violence. |
