I'm putting this here just in case, but is there something major I'm missing about this "scandal?" Has she really had her whole business destroyed and become shunned by the whole country because, during a deposition where she was under oath, she admitted to using the n-word 30+ years ago?

I'm starting to think lying under oath isn't even a moral failing anymore.

Pair this with Alec Baldwin's homophobic slurrs getting a free pass, or Bill Maher's calling a female politician a ****. There seems to be no standard of judgement.

Well, considering in was in a deposition in a lawsuit that claims she was abusive and racist in her business, it's not surprising that other companies that carry her product don't want to be tarred with the same brush.

Personally I'm reserving judgement until the lawsuit is concluded.

Apples and oranges really. Both Alec and Bill have public images that are "edgy" or controversial so those actions are basically par for the course.

Paula's image has been one of the sweet southern grandmother, so these actions if true are counter to her public image.

Recently, I overheard a black Master Sergeant at my unit say to someone on the phone "I'm black and proud, but I really hate niggers." This was in utter sincerity, and he did not know he could eb heard across the partition when he said it. It was not "niggaz" or anything like that, and we are talking about an extremely competent and unfailingly polite man with a distinguished career as an NCO.

The fact is that using the word "nigger" simply shouldn't be a problem anymore, seeing as "hillbilly" and "redneck" aren't. Hispanic folks here regularly refer to illegals as wetbacks, and don't take offense just because a white person does it. Blacks need to be told that they simply don't own the word and don't have the right to tell everyone else it's a source of major offense.

Hell, I'd just be happy with getting the word niggardly back DE...

This entire Paula Deen "scandal" has been escalated by the PC media. She honestly answered a question in a deposition that she had used "that dreaded N word" 30 years ago while describing having a black man hold a gun to her head during a bank robbery. In my opinion this is a witch hunt by the media and the Politically Correct Police. I can almost guarantee that everyone alive today has said or done something that would be considered "a sin" or "unPClike" at some time in their life. Those companies that dropped Paula Deen over this just lost my business, and I'm not especially fond of the lady. They over-reacted to save their bottom line. I hope it backfired on them.

Dunno, the stuff she said was pretty questionable. I'd stop watching her if I watched her or TV, but I don't so I don't give a ****.

The give-two-fu##s factory denied me admission. There are so many examples of this being a double standard that my head would explode attempting to list them all.

So my question is, whats the real reason shes being castigated in the media. Whod she piss off?

She used the slur, sure, but that seems to be more the galvanizing soundbite rather than the root issue.

There's a whole history of things like:
- Wanting to stage a "plantation-style" wedding complete with black men and women dressed in slave outfits as waitstaff
- Paying black employees not in money, but in beer
- Generally defending slavery
- Mocking the skin color of her staff and calling them "my little monkey"

If anything, I'd actually say the focus on "she just said the n-word" in the media is helping her; it gives people a nice shield to leap to her defense and say "oh, that poor old woman, all she did was say the n-word" without looking further into the allegations against her.

Personally, whatever gets Lardamom off of television and out of stores works perfectly for me. She's disgusting (her cooking and antics) and creepy (any photo of her whatsoever).

This. Dumbest scandal ever. Shoot, she's a Democrat who campaigned for Obama. The PC police find another sacrifice.

The things she said are kinda indefensible. It's not a big deal, but it's weird that some of you think she got kicked off for some "other" reason. Myself, I can't construe the things she said as just being insensitive or ignorant, although she's probably both, it was fairly racist even if she didn't use the n-word. If one of my employees was at the front counter of the Applebees saying questionable things about the Mexicans, I'd probably fire them too.

What's the source for these, besides her opponents in the lawsuit?

And what exactly is "generally defending slavery"?

I dunno about all of the Farsky list. I don't think it helps to say things that may not be 100% true. She could probably stand to read Frederick Douglass, before romanticizing anything about the plantation though. Her sort of ignorance can only be cured with knowledge.

I find the terming of a "southern plantation" themed wedding as "slavery themed" at best to be a distortion. while no one could argue that southern plantations are not tied closely to slavery, on the other hand claiming that a wedding based on them was a "slavery wedding" is really not accurate; even in the pre civil war south slavery did not exist for its own sake. It's far more "tasteless" than it is racist unless someone wants to establish that the wedding in question was supposed to celebrate slavery rather than the marriage.

And in any case, "generally defending slavery" is stupid. That may as well be "crimes against the state".

I wonder if Walmart is going to get rid of all the recordings they sell of people saying that same word?

Author:  Jasmy [ Sun Jun 30, 2013 11:47 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Paula Deen

From what I understand, Walmart doesn't sell the R rated versions of these rappers which include the profanity and the "N" word. However, other stores do sell that "stuff" (wanted to say something else, but thought better of it). I don't give a flying rat's *** about Paula Deen other than the fact this "witch hunt" is uncalled for. If a single rapper or comedian of the black color can use the "N" word without repercussions, then something some 66 year old white woman used in the past means nothing. I don't understand the backlash against her...what is the ulterior motive??

Its not exactly a slow news week, I'd imagine someone who hated her anyway pumped it up and the PC crowd jumped all over it as their latest little scandal.

Would anyone have believed her if she said she hadn't? I thought it was brave of her to admit it but I didn't expect a response like this.

Is there anyone here who has never under any conditions used that word? I have, but I was a kid repeating what others were saying. Once I learned what it meant and how bad it was in the eyes of my parents I never said it again.

That I remember anyway. 76-82 were kind of blurry in a lot of ways.

From what I understand, it's less about the n-word and more about sexual harassment in the workplace. A white manager sued because of the conduct of Deen's brother in the workplace, which was not addressed by the company. (See http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2013/0 ... -word.html, for example.)

(I've also heard allegations of wage theft - forcing employees to work events at her home for no compensation.)

The way this is being presented may be completely different than the facts actually presented show, but with being portrayed as her being OMG RACIST *****!!! Why then do people like Daniel Tosh get a free pass but not her?

The handy excuse of being a comedian or "edgy".
