Not to be confused with the messiah.

http://reason.com/blog/2013/08/11/tenne ... -is-not-na

Quote:
Tennessee Judge Says: Your Baby Is Not Named "Messiah." He's Named "Martin"? Why? I'm From the Government. Also, Jesus Christ.

Brian Doherty|Aug. 11, 2013 7:23 pm

Judicial busybodyism hits Tennessee parents where they, and their son, live. Child Support Magistrate Lu Ann Ballew (and get a load of that ridiculous monicker!) lays down the law and claims the parental power to name, in the name of the Lord no less, as ABC reports:

A judge in Tennessee changed a 7-month-old boy's name to Martin from Messiah, saying the religious name was earned by one person and "that one person is Jesus Christ."

Child Support Magistrate Lu Ann Ballew ordered the name change last week, according to WBIR-TV (http://on.wbir.com/1cDOeTY). The boy's parents were in court because they could not agree on the child's last name, but when the judge heard the boy's first name, she ordered it changed, too....

Here's a bit of very surprising news that makes the judge's decision all the more imperious and absurd:

Messiah was No. 4 among the fastest-rising baby names in 2012, according to the Social Security Administration's annual list of popular baby names....

Ballew thinks the kid will have trouble growing up, what with all the Christians around the county.

Nick Gillespie back in 2009 defended the right to absurd names.

Hat tip: Nick del Castillo.

Clearly, it's time to begin emigrating from America to escape religious persecution.

I don't think the judge should have intervened, but I can't imagine why you would want to name your child messiah.

That's atrocious.

And the judge's decision is pretty bad, too.

For the same reason some people name their kid "Jesus" I guess. Messiah isn't my idea of a great name, but I've seen much, much worse.

I once saw twins (boy and girl) with the exact name, only the girl had one extra letter. And the name was alphabet soup a mile long......like Xzbcdaphilamnabecadni

Seen a woman name her child "Nosmo King" (because she saw the No Smoking sign). A woman named her girl "Female" (pronounced it fe-mahl-i). Saw a woman name her girl Vagina (pronounce it va-Gina).

Apparently Messiah is a name rising in popularity. Which may be even more depressing than this core story itself.

I guess she's not aware that Jesus is also a pretty common name.

Well, looks like everyone has a Handel on this story.

Because, they don't want their sons associated with a cheating athlete?

While the practice seems odd to me on the surface, I'm stumped to explain how it's really any different than naming your kid "Joshua". And now I'm even more stumped by why this is a thing in Spanish, but not (as far as I know) in Italian or French. I'm not sure about Portuguese or Romanian, though.

To most U.S., Canadian, and European Christians, it's akin to drawing likenesses of Allah or the prophet Mohammad. For Latin American Christians, it's a popular name precisely because of the association.

It's worth pointing out that one of our most well-known physicists is named Isaac. One of the most well-known presidents is named Abraham. It isn't hard to find people named Moses, either.

Yea, but those are the names of famous Jews. And you know how much Christians in the US value the Jews...

I don't know of anyone that thinks namin a kid Jesus is equivalent to drawing a likeness of Mohammed. English-speaking Christians know perfectly well it's a thing in Spanish, it just doesn't happen to be a thing here.

English-speaking Christians aren't going to behead someone for doing it, obviously, but it is a taboo. It's something you Don't Do (tm).

I don't know that it's any more taboo than naming your kid Chauncy or Percivil or anything else likely to get him beat up at a bus stop. No one thinks it amiss that Hispanics do it.

Sanity (on the part of the government anyway) has prevailed and the judges decision was overturned. #toolazytolink
