Retailer commits to more 'inclusive marketing' after meeting with Let Toys Be Toys.

Toys R Us is looking to work closely with the Let Toys Be Toys consumer campaign group, agreeing to become more inclusive in its marketing of toys to girls and boys.

The news follows a meeting last week between TRU's UK board members and Let Toys Be Toys, with the group believing it marks a major change in the UK toy sales landscape.

TRU will draw up a set of principles for in-store signage meaning that, in the long-term, explicit references to gender will be removed and images will show boys and girls enjoying the same toys. TRU also promised to start by looking at the way toys are represented in its upcoming Christmas catalogue.

MD Roger McLaughlan said: "We very much enjoyed meeting Let Toys Be Toys. We will work with the Let Toys be Toys team to ensure we develop the best plan for our customers."

Megan Perryman, Let Toys be Toys campaigner, added: "We're delighted to be working so closely with a major toy retailer and believe that there is much common ground here. Even in 2013, boys and girls are still growing up being told that certain toys are 'for' them, while others are not.

"This is not only confusing but extremely limiting, as it strongly shapes their ideas about who they are and who they can go on to become. We look forward to seeing Toys R Us lead the way to a more inclusive future for boys and girls."

Other retailers including Tesco, Sainsbury's, Boots, The Entertainer and TK Maxx have agree to banish 'girls' and 'boys' signs from the aisles following intervention from Let Toys Be Toys.

I don't really have a problem with them doing this, since there's no particular reason certain toys are exclusively for one gender or another. That said, anyone that thinks that gender differences, and the accompanying general preference in toys is going to go away (or should go away) is fooling themselves. Males and females are different. That is not a bad thing, it just is what it is. People crossing the lines is ok, and if people want to sell their merchandise with less emphasis on the lines that's ok too, but if Toys R Us hadn't done that, it would hardly say anything bad about them either. I find the existence of this Let Toys Be Toys group to be rather silly but mostly harmless.

If the goal is to sell more easy-bake ovens to boys, then it makes sense to stop making them all pink and show a boy playing with one now and again.

That said, if the goal is to help correct some sort of social injustice, then it seems rather silly.

For a minute I overplayed the scope of this and was thinking about differences in actual product marketing - the easy-bake oven gets chrome and a flame job, and Transformers get girl robots, and so on. This is just in-store signage and catalogs, though, from the sound of it. So it's the same pink Barbie doll aisle unless Mattel chimes in; Toys r Us are just going to make sure that they depict boys and girls (of varying ethnicities too?) playing with everything from now on.

I'm for this if it means we get more female mathematicians and engineers out of it somehow.

One of the great injustices of my time; I always wanted to be able to make myself cookies on-demand but refused to use a pink oven :[

Easy bakes were not for sandwiches. Easy bakes were for cakes!

My kids both spend all their toy-playing time playing with Lego blocks. (They have "Girls" lego, now, too, which my daughter has, but they end up mixing everything anyway.)

Low cost and effort change - retail stores already semi-regularly reinvent and redistribute their marketing materials and in-store signage. If they wait and synch up with their normal seasonal overhauls, the cost relative to any other re-signing would be almost zero.

They have the potential to sell more things to more people (potentially 100% increase in market size). Plus they make themselves look progressive on the subject of gender roles and get all these new-fangled hippy "boys are girls and girls are boys" parents to go to their store.

No-brainer.

I am 37 and a half years old and I would use the hell out of that.

It could spawn a whole new line of reality TV... Pimp my EZBake

Mine was the Holly Hobbie edition - it looked like an old fashioned oven. :)

And I just want Toys R Us to actually make it easier to find things. The one near me is like a labyrinth - you have to go around the perimeter to pass from the girls' toys to the boys' toys. There's no direct route through the middle!

Seri,

They do that on purpose. All large retail stores do similar things to make you spend more time in the store, and see more things to buy.

Even some grocery stores do that. There's one near us that makes the Produce section a maze you have to get through to get to the rest of the store.

Until this thread I had no idea that EZ Bake ovens were real ovens. I thought they were pretend ovens. The thought of letting small children handle raw ingredients, and then cook is somewhat... unsettling.

Am I missing something?

It used lightbulbs instead of industrial heating coils, but those suckers could get hot. Easily 375+ degrees. Definitely enough to make baked goods.

IIRC it is all mix based and you only added water and oil. Nothing that would be considered "raw" ingredients.

I'm picturing eggs and stuff. Not as much "save the children" (though I suppose raw eggs are bad for you) but "save my house".

If it's a premixed dough, then sure.

Yeah, but I always preferred to just bake in a real oven, with real ingredients. :)
