The "shutdown" only furloughs 25-30% of federal workers. I'm curious though, do you think that failure to pass a budget should mean the government shuts down everything? As in, the military stops being supplied and commanded and everyone has to fend for themselves, the border stops being patrolled, laws stop being enforced, the courts no longer function, etc.? |

Ok, so I live in MD, where pretty much everyone seems to work for the fed government, or for a company that works for the fed government. we're projected to take a 15mil hit to the economy per day of shut down. it's a liberal state where obama can do no wrong and republicans can do no right. And yet, everyone seems to be just rolling their eyes and not giving a crap. |

I can tell you that it's a reasonably big deal in the finance world, though exactly how big will depend on the duration of the shutdown. We just went pencils-down on a couple of billion dollar deals because they involve the DOE and we can't go forward without them. Also, some pretty major reforms of the OTC derivatives markets are supposed to kick in tomorrow, but the CFTC is down to a skeleton crew during the shutdown, so the banks and dealers trying to implement that stuff are feeling a bit jittery about what they're supposed to do. Hopefully the shutdown will be short, and no deals will outright die, but if this drags on for a few weeks, we're going to see billions and billions of dollars worth of investment go elsewhere. |

The well should be considered dry, time for plan B ... which should be like what happens everywhere else when times are tough - it's time to tighten the belt and spend less. |

When you're talking about markets that ebb and flow in part based on the mood of the traders, it's not a good thing when those guys are feeling jittery. I was sitting in a room with a bunch of big-wigs from a major derivatives dealer yesterday, listening to them arguing about "what the **** we're supposed to be doing as of Wednesday" and whether or not to shift more of their trades into transactions that aren't subject to the new regs until the details get hashed out. Most of that's just the result of having to adapt to a new regulatory structure anyway, but the shutdown exacerbates the situation. I'm not saying it's the end of the world; I'm just saying that uncertainty is not good for the markets. |

I'm not arguing the merits; I'm just pointing out that there are some significant second-order effects to the government shutdown beyond whether or not the mail gets delivered. |
