At the time of the election, and why?

Peeps are talking about how if Hillary runs she would be the most qualified prez ever to enter the office.

Consider the times somewhat - for example, someone who is incredibly qualified in 1820 really would not be qualified to be pres today.

I keep coming back to John Adams.

Established lawyer (which was pretty important at the time due to all the legal frameworks being established), instrumental in the Boston uprising, leader in the continental congress, ambassador to europe, author of the massachusetts constitution and involved in the US constitution, vice president.

Yeah, you totally skipped over the "and why"

Ronald Reagan

Modern presidents are media figureheads, his acting career prepared him extremely well to perform on the national and international stage.

Nobody "acted" more presidential than RR.

Because he was intimately familiar with Original Intent, common law and by all accounts a rather bright gellow. He also had experiece with trial law, private commerce, and dealing with foriegn powers. Furthermore, while we would have probably disagreed on matters of personal theology, he umderstood the importance of judeo christian ethic to a free society

I am with you on John Adams Ara.

I am also with Tas on the modern era presidents but I would argue more than acting Presidential you have to impress the right people/have the right connections and I feel Clinton did a better job of building those bonds and weaseling through than Reagan did.

Impressing the right people and having the right connections will get you elected, but it has nothing to do with leading or fulfilling the duties of Prez.

George Washington. All his contemporaries did a great deal of talking, arguing, and debating. Washington made it happen. He was the one that did the fighting, he was the one to preside over the bickering of the Constitutional Convention, and he was the only one that commanded the respect during or after that to keep people and states from walking when they couldn't have their own way.

The question wasn't about execution, it was about qualifications.

Keep going, I find this stuff fascinating. How do you guys feel about Clinton's quals (not politics)?

I definitely think she's extremely qualified. Getting a little old, though.

John Quincy Adams. He had been a diplomat, a senator, and a Representative. He had been Secretary of State. He had performed well above par in each of these positions. He was an important player in the Treaty of Ghent (War of 1812 treaty) the annexation of Florida and the negotiation of the US/Canadian border. This was all before he became President. He was Minister to the Netherlands, to Portugal, and to Prussia. His writings were used in at least one of Washington's speeches.

He authored the Monroe doctrine, interned under his father while John Adams was American Envoy to France, was fluent in French and Dutch, and familiar with several other languages, including German.

Jefferson was brilliant in many areas, Washington was the effective leader that kept it all together, but as for qualifications, John Quincy Adams has them in spades. He was also a pretty good President, envisioning and beginning the transition of the US into a world power.

Trivia, he took his Presidential oath on a book of Constitutional Law, not the traditional Bible.

He only served one term. Andrew Jackson's popularity as the bastard hero of the Indian Wars was too strong a factor.

Qualification to be an effective President, or qualifications to be a likely election-winner? They're two different questions. And our problem is that our elections (and the coverage devoted to them) have focused too much on the latter and have been ignoring the former.

Not to mention that she was supposedly unstoppable in 2008.

She would've been better than Obama in the office. Obama is a very good campaigner, and that's about it.

And that she's still not "qualified."

This discussion is meaningless without an agreed-upon use of the word "qualified."

wtf?

• be a natural-born citizen of the United States;
• be at least thirty-five years old;
• have been a permanent resident in the United States for at least fourteen years.

How is Hilary not qualified?

Wrong, FDR Kept getting elected, as was legal if no traditional at the time. William Henry Harrison, Zachary Taylor, Abraham Lincoln, James A. Garfield, William McKinley, and Warren G. Harding all died in office before his long run.

Black > vagina.

Because liberal white guilt > liberal misogny guilt

I meet all the requirements to be elected President, by I am not qualified. I lack the desire, political experience, leadership, and force of personality to do the job well.

I still aver that John Quincy Adams was the most qualified man to assume the Presidency at the time he was elected. His resume is he most filled out with relevant experience and he had performed well in every position. Does anyone have a more qualified candidate for this?
