National Republican Congressional Campaign using fake Democrat websites to lure voters
Posted by
CNN Special Investigations Unit Reporter Drew Griffin

(CNN) – A warning this election season: If you are searching the Web for information on Democratic congressional candidates, read the fine print.

At least 15 websites that appear to be official campaign sites for Democratic candidates, are actually the handiwork of the National Republican Congressional Committee.

In an effort to improve their online efforts this election season, the NRCC’s digital team came up with what the group believes is a great idea: get out the Republican message through fake Democrat sites.

“The idea is people who are looking for information on the candidate, one of the places we all go now is online and so this is a way for folks to find out more about the candidates and information they may not find on the candidate’s own site,” said Daniel Scarpinato, the NRCC's press secretary.

The NRCC bought up hundreds of URLs on potential weak Democratic candidates and created sites that mimic the real ones.

It may sound deceiving, but Scarpinato insists the well-thought out, well-planned program is pure genius.

”Well, we are very proud of this program.”

Montana Democratic congressional candidate John Lewis has a different opinion.

Lewis is one of the Democrats who Republicans have targeted with their own site called JohnLewis4congress.com.

”I have seen a lot of unfortunate uses of deception in the last few elections,” Lewis told CNN. “This is just another in a long list of that.”

Lewis said Montana voters will be able to “see right through a website that is based on deception.” Still he bemoans what he calls outside interests backed by “dark money” trying to trick voters in his state.

Scarpinato at the NRCC says there are no tricks at all and disputes anyone’s claim that the sites are deceptive.

“I think that sites are clear in terms of the disclosure and the content where were coming from,” Scarpinato said. “And I also think it’s important for voters to get all the perspectives on the candidates. So just as a candidate is going to put information out about themselves, we’re going to put out information about the candidate that they are not putting out that we think is important for voters to know.”

And to do that, the National Republican Congressional Campaign says it will expand its building of fake sites.

Do Democrats do it, too?

The NRCC press secretary told us the Republican strategy is cleverer, but that Democrats have done the same thing.

One day after CNN’s interview Scarpinato directed CNN to a site mocking a Republican built by the Florida State Democratic Party, which the national Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee insists it had nothing to do with.

In a statement to CNN, the DCCC wrote, “It is not the DCCC’s practice to make websites that could be confused with the opponents site.”

Undeterred, the National Republican Congressional Committee thinks it has a winner and will create more fake websites as the 2014 midterm elections draw near.

I'm not sure how it's dishonest, deceptive, or dirty.

Deceptive, yes, they are putting words in someone else's mouth. If the someone they are impersonating wanted to say that, they would.

Dishonest, if they believe in the message, why can't they honestly and openly say it themselves. What is it about the message that makes it better coming from the other side?

Dirty when and if it go from an altered message to dirt to smear the other guy with.

Pretty much an anything to win strategy, the ends justify the means. Not honorable, not fair play. Then again, politics isn't about honesty these days, its about treason, deceit, profit and sponsorship.

Someone didn't go to the website, and simply took the author of the article in the OP's word for it.

Some creative service marking, and the Democratic candidates in question can probably successfully file a complaint with ICANN and get the domains.

I dunno. I think the litmus test for me is, "Is it libelous?" If it's true enough for print, this is simply presenting angles to audiences that would normally tune you out because of your label. If that audience, when it actually gets a chance to see the issues you present, changes their mind about the candidate, is that really deceptive?

It's probably more critical thinking than they did before reading the site. And I find it hard to argue against that.

It's also nowhere near deceptively labeled where the source is. Anybody with any reading comprehension at all will spot these a mile away. The tone should be enough to make you check the source, and then when you check the source you say "oh, it's a Republican site." Not deceptive. The only thing deceptive is that the link looks like it would support different content.

That's a Rickroll at worst.

You should probably click the link and read the website, as the article in the original post is more libelous and misrepresenting than the website. In fact, I can't see anything about the website that's problematic or not protected by free-speech: nowhere does http://www.JohnLewis4Congress.com pretend to be John Lewis's website. In fact, it has a giant text box indicating it's a paid political advertisement from the RNC. You would have to be blind, dumb, and stupid to think it was pretending to be Lewis's official website.

I'm not an IP lawyer, but I'm pretty sure that if Pepsi put up a website with the word Coke in the name, a big picture of a Coke can on the main page, and a huge button labeled BUY NOW that actually led to a site for purchasing Pepsi, no court in the country would hesitate to slap Pepsi hard for violating trademark law and possibly even attempting to commit fraud, regardless of whatever explanatory text was also on the site.

Different laws for personal publicity rights than for trademarks, of course, so there may or may not be a legal problem here, but the deceptive intent is pretty obvious when you consider the analogy.

Except the site doesn't misrepresent itself or where the donations go in any way. The Donate Button has mouse-over text that tells you that you are going to the RNCC. Like I said, you would have to be incredibly stupid for that to get donations sent unintentionally. If it's successful in any way, shape, or form similar to what you guys are suggesting its intent is, then we can explain the current President by the aggregate stupidity of Democratic voters.

In other words, it doesn't matter what is clearly labeled on the site, just that a liberal got upset about the domain name.

The same liberals who don't seem to get upset that people think Sarah Palin claimed to be able to see Russia from her house, which is in fact a Tina Fey quote.

Liberals - when one standard just isn't enough.

I was prepared to be outraged. Went to the site. You'd have to be retarded to mistake it for a DNC site.

Yeah you guys are right that if you read the text it's obviously against him. Don't even try for a second to say that they don't INTEND to mislead with this ****, though. It doesn't matter that smart people will realize what this is. The intent is what people are upset about.

What? You thought they'd pick a flattering picture?

Remember Michael "Mickey Mouse Ears" Dukakis. That one video of him riding around in a tank I've heard credited with losing him the election. (not sure I buy it, but it didn't help)

Click on donate and it takes you to a page with the largest lettering as follows:

"Make a Contribution Today to Help Defeat John Lewis and candidates like him"

There's nothing misleading about this. The ONLY thing annoying about it is they hijacked the domain. If I'm a supporter, I might go to this site. Once I got there, though - OBVIOUS anti-Lewis site.

Sorry if you are literate enough to navigate the internet but not quite smart enough to actually read the information provided to you before throwing your credit card information at a site. Here are a few helpful tips:
Spoiler:
Those pop-ups that tell you that you've got a virus and "click here to remove it" yeah... you shouldn't.
Those before and after pics are total bullshit, there is no secret rare ingredient discovered by scientists that causes you to lose 120 lbs in a week.
There is no weird trick to get laid by any girl at any time.
When a website offers you a free service but requires a credit card to proceed they are going to charge you at some point, probably on a recurring basis.

I'm not the idiot doing those things, but you can't deny that those popups and the design of this website are targetted at that same demographic.
