Dayton police show RTA driver's bullet-riddled Bible

By Breaking News Staff
DAYTON — Dayton police held a press conference this afternoon to discuss and answer questions about the investigation into the assault on RTA bus driver Rickey Wagoner.
Wagoner was assaulted, reportedly by three males, and shot multiple times while working early Monday morning in the 1900 block of Lakeview Avenue.
Police displayed "The Message: Bible in Contemporary Language" book that the 49-year-old Wagoner claimed was in his shirt pocket and blocked two bullets from entering his chest.
The photo of the book, displayed on a slideshow during the press conference, showed damages from two bullets that hit it.
Police have not made any arrests in the case. Wagoner is recovering from his injuries at home.
Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl said the gun used in the attack, a .25-caliber handgun, was recovered. Biehl said detectives have not been able to trace the gun to it's registered owner.
He said investigators believe they have recovered all the shell casings left by the shooter at the scene.
This story will be updated as more information is released this afternoon.

Coincidence or Intervention, it's still pretty cool either way.

I've heard of urban legends like this before where someone was saved from a bullet by having a bible in their shirt pocket....kinda cool to see it actually happen. I wonder if he would have had his weight watchers pocket guide or something instead if it would have even made the news.

I'd like to think that someone would have reported on it regardless of what it was that he kept in his pocket, it's pretty miraculous. I have to imagine that this is much more "viral-worthy" though because it was a Bible. Glad the dude is alive either way.

I would have been in trouble. I don't wear shirts with pockets, nor do I carry Bibles around.

Unless I'm gonna get shot like Forrest Gump, mines not much help either. I think it's a good story no matter what and said as much.

Case into shooting of RTA bus driver closed as ‘unfounded’
Quote:
“After conducting a comprehensive investigation that has spanned nearly four months, the police department has concluded Mr. Wagoner fabricated his statements,” Donaghy said, thanking police for their extensive probe. “All of us at RTA are angry at the thought that an employee would allegedly mislead the police, the public and us and use ugly racial stereotypes in doing so.”

Mythbusters did an episode where they figured out how many phone books it'd take to bulletproof a car. They shot all kinds of guns (pistols, sniper rifles, etc) at all thicknesses of phonebooks and whatnot until they figured out the optimal setup.

I wonder if they'll do an episode on this one.

My dad did an experiment like that once. He set up 2 thick Cleveland phone books (this was back in the 1980s, when phone books were REALLY thick) then fired a .380 Walther PPK at them with a hollow-point bullet from 10 feet away.

The bullet went completely through the first and halfway through the second.
