Brilliantly-executed ad from Greenpeace criticizing Lego's partnership with Shell:

Posted without comment regarding the substance. Just impressed by the execution.

Define Irony: Using a company's product (made from fossil fuels) to decry said company's alliance with a fossil fuel provider and posting that video on the internet so that people can watch it on their computers (also made partially from fossil fuel, and also derive most of their power from fossil fuels)

Yes the video is "cute", but it doesn't tell me anything useful about why the decades old Shell/Lego "alliance" is bad aside from the stupid foot-stamping "fossil fuels are ebil!!!" Yes Lego gas stations have been Shell for as long as I can remember. Why would it be "less evil" for them to be BP (Exxon, Marathon, what have you) or some made up name?

Their website is equally useless, only vaguely alluding that Shell is somehow drilling in the arctic in a bad way (probably at all in their eyes)

I wonder if Lego (or whomever owns "everything is awesome") will lodge a copyright complaint for use of their song.

It wouldn't matter. Greenpeace would protest a partnership with anybody. I'm surprised they're not protesting LEGO for being the largest tire manufacturer in the world.

Fair use. Even though they made a depressing version of it.

If Canadian space dude had to take down his Space Oddity video, I'm not sure this would apply. Not saying they should have too, just saying it wouldn't hurt for google to apply their policy consistently (whatever that policy is), but I digress.

Myeh. Bowie granted dude the rights for one year. Which was also a BS takedown. Space Oddity should have been left up forever.

I agree, Space Oddity on the ISS was an iconic part of history and not at all a threat to Bowie's IP. at least this you could argue is being used to (vainly IMO, but none the less) damage the IP holder. I'm not saying either should be taken down, just saying if not one, why not both, or preferably neither.

I'm glad Lego is being tough on this one though.

Greenpeace is a morally bankrupt organization with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Yes, Greenpeace is the environment version of PETA, blah blah blah who gives a ****. It's an exceptionally well-done ad, regardless of the organization behind it. Almost comically maudlin at points (the close-up of the crying guy), but very well-done, but I suppose that's rather intentional.

One point of note, however...they screwed up the lyrics. It's "Everything is awesome, when we're living our dream," not "when we're living on a dream." You'd think with the care placed in the ad's creation, someone would've bothered to google the words. #pedantry

Heh. The drowning puppy scene at 0:58 was that moment for me.

I wonder if that was done intentionally. "Living on a dream" implies self-delusion (as in, Shell's use of Lego is designed to lull us into accepting the delusion that Arctic drilling isn't an environmental mess), whereas "living our dream" implies fantasy/wish-fulfillment.

Why the vitriol? I agree they're mostly an ineffective group of spotlight-seekers these days, but they were pretty big players in getting the public to care about whaling and ocean dumping back in the day.

Where they first lost me was by opposing both fossil fuels and nuclear power. those two aims are mutually exclusive. we need more power, not less. solar and wind won't cut it.

Well, they oppose those, too. At least, every attempted implementation of them so far.

They're against fusion research too, AFAIK they want to ban any and all splitting of atoms for both commercial and military purposes.

For the record, fusion is more about mashing atoms together.

What would they have us power our society with?

I'd say fire, like cavemen, but that releases greenhouse gasses.

Their idea is that people should just use less power.

AS in, a lot less. As in, lots of people needing to die out so they can have an environmentalist utopia. I wish someone would sink a few more of their ships, then they might get the message.

Meh - any important issue is going to have fanatics at either end. It helps keep the masses focused.
