Why I am no longer a feminist

I am not the typical woman you see posting up pictures and declaring she doesn’t need feminism. I considered myself a feminist for 30 years. Like most women who consider themselves feminists, I didn’t read feminist literature or take women’s studies courses. I just believed it was about equality. I believed, and still do, that women are as intelligent and capable as men and should have equal rights and opportunities. That is what I thought feminism was about. I was wrong.

In June of 2013, my boyfriend was driving me to work. We were pulled over by the Ashland Police, and he was arrested for rape, cuffed, and thrown in the maximum security rape tank at the Jackson County Jail on a $1 million bail. It seems there had already been a secret grand jury that had indicted on just the testimony of his accuser.

I was completely aware of the allegations. His fathers now ex-wife, Lisa, a mentally ill woman with a history of false reporting, was doing it to punish his father. It turns out the judge in the divorce had already dismissed her claims against her husband of sexually abusing the chihuahuas. Now she was going after Greg to hurt his father. She had told a friend that if she “didn’t get the house, the boat and the dogs in the divorce she would destroy” his father’s life by claiming that he had raped her.

I sprung into action. After alerting my work about the situation, I drove home to start making phone calls. A terrible mistake had been made. I believed that I could get them the information and he would be released. I was wrong.

First, what I found out is that the police had not done an investigation. When Greg found out what Lisa was claiming, he immediately contacted the police. It took weeks for them to get back to him. He went down and told the detective in charge what had and had not happened. There had never been any sex, consensual or otherwise. Greg gave him a list of witnesses and informed him of her mental illness and the fact that she was on a list of psychotropic drugs. No witnesses were never contacted.

How does this happen? How does a completely innocent man, with a completely clean record and no evidence that a crime was committed end up being thrown in jail and held on an enormous bail? We thought it must be complete incompetence. We were wrong.

It turns out the Ashland Police Department was rolling out a new program. It is called You Have Options, and it is widely celebrated and implemented in police forces nationwide. Under this program, the police act more as rape crisis counselors than detectives. They blindly believe the accuser, allow the accuser to decide how much of an investigation takes place if any. It also allows the accuser to decide if the witnesses or the accused are interviewed or informed of the charges. If Greg’s father had not alerted him to what she was doing, he might not have been aware of it until they were arresting him.

In the week after Greg’s arrest, I did the investigation the police should have done. I found Lisa’s daughter, who was willing to testify for the defense on Lisa’s multiple false accusations. I had established that Lisa was not even in the state at the time she claims the assault happened. (two years prior), and I got a letter from a friend of Lisa’s who claimed that Lisa had premeditated the false allegation to punish Greg’s father in the event she did not get what she wanted in the divorce. I found a lot of exculpatory evidence and got it to the police. Making matters worse, in that first week I got fired from the job that I loved and was given no explanation. It would all be worth it if I could get Greg out of that horrible place. The detective put together a report and delivered it to the DA who promptly ignored it.

It turns out that Oregon has hearsay exception laws that allow for the indictment for rape on just the accusers testimony if there is no other evidence and if there is no reason to question that testimony. By not doing an investigation, the police managed to avoid all the evidence and all the reasons to question her claims. And as a safety net for the DA, just in case they are completely wrong and destroying innocent people’s lives, the DA gets the grand jury to give them immunity. This is a recipe for disaster. No, accountability.

Fortunately, Greg got an amazing public defender. She uncovered the fact that Lisa had claimed that Greg had been molesting her for years, and it was all in her psychiatric report. The police had requested that report over a year ago, and the DA was still waiting for it. When the report finally arrived, 53 days after Greg had been incarcerated and the day before jury selection, there was no mention of it. Lisa had made it up and lied to the grand jury, a felony. The charges were “dismissed in the interest of justice.” Greg was released, and I had him home.

That is when the real learning began. At this point, I still believed that feminism was about equality. If feminists knew this was happening, they would be concerned, too. Again, I was wrong. Feminists asked us not to come forward with the story. They did not want other women to be discouraged from coming forward. The DA chose not to file charges, against Lisa stating that

“Just as Hartley is innocent under the law because of his constitutional protections, so, too, the same presumption of innocence applies to his accuser.” “How would we prove it? There was no confession or recantation.”

So, the only time they will consider it a false report is when the accuser actually recants and confesses to the crime? The only evidence there had ever been of a crime, in this case, was of her filing a false report and committing perjury before a grand jury. No wonder they get to claim that false reporting is rare. What is rare is women admitting they falsely accused innocent men.

Apparently we were supposed to go home and try to get on with our lives. We were supposed to pretend it never happened. The state, the city, and police refuse to acknowledge what happened. It wasn’t their fault. There would be no justice. At least Rolling Stone admitted their mistake and apologized. We can not even get them to acknowledge we exist.

I descended on social media like a storm. Surely those good people on Huffington Post, Raw Story, Salon, among others would care that this was happening. False reporting is not only horrendous for the accused it makes it harder for actual rape victims to get justice. The response was being called a traitor to my gender, to be told I was internalizing my misogyny. I actually had a feminist threaten to destroy my life and contact my employer to get me fired. Jokes on her; I had no job.

Most of the feminists who bothered to listen, came back with attacks. My boyfriend should learn to control himself. I calmly explained he had done nothing wrong. They could not hear it. Feminists repeat the lie that false reporting is rare often enough that they blindly believe it. Even when the cases that feminist journalists use to prove that there is a rape crisis end up being false reportings, they still either choose to believe the accuser, despite evidence they are lying, or claim that at least they brought attention to the problem. They are so blinded they cannot even admit that a crime with actual victims has been committed.

The common narrative among feminists is that women do not lie about rape. They also charge anyone who bothers to question the veracity of those claims with victim blaming. There have been recent protests at Berkley and Ohio University against affording the accused due process. These feminists feel that since women do not lie about rape, we should just be able to assume that all accused are guilty.
There is absolutely no concern that innocent lives may be destroyed.

When the Rolling Stone came forward with an apology over the article on the UVA Gang Rape, which also ended up being a false reporting, their was a tremendous outrage. Feminists were not angry because innocent men were falsely accused and had their reputations damaged. They were not angry because a woman had committed the crime of false reporting. They were angry that Rolling Stone followed this narrative and inadvertently exposed the fact that women do, in fact, lie about rape. The fact that there were actual victims of the false reporting is not even mentioned. Not only did they not care about the victims of false reporting, they flatly refused to admit that they even existed.

Fortunately a local monthly publication was willing to cover our nightmare and wrote an amazing story, but people needed to know about this outside of our little valley though. The You Have Option program responsible was being outsourced to other states. It was a finalist for the Webber Seavey award for Quality in Law Enforcement. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand was promoting it to Congress as a solution to the rape crisis and was using it as the model for the Campus Accountability & Safety Act (CASA) program. I wrote articles and letters to every media outlet I could find contact information for, from DemocracyNow to FOX news. Absolutely no one was interested in covering the story. How could they continue to claim that false reporting was rare if they acknowledged it was happening?

The bigger question we should all be asking is, if there is indeed a rape crisis and if false reporting is so rare, why is it these journalists who are intent on exposing the rape crisis keep exposing false reportings and can not seem to find an actual rape?

What I learned in those first months was that feminism was not interested in equality. Feminism is a profoundly dishonest ideology that puts forth dishonest studies designed to get the results they want. Feminists attack anyone who even attempts to point out its shortcomings and hypocrisy. Feminism is in no way interested in the truth. And feminists are completely unconcerned with the injustices suffered by the falsely accused, all while claiming that they are fighting for men’s rights as well.

I am a strong intelligent woman who fights for equality. I am an educated, a middle aged, hairy legged, liberal, hippy. I thought I was a feminist. I was wrong.

This is a story I think that more than a few people who read this can empathize. You need to keep in mind that this could happen to anyone leaving a relationship. In this case in particular you don’t even have to be married to the person for it to happen

Good article. Modern-day "feminism" is irrational, unethical, and totalitarian.

I'm glad she saw the light and sadded that it had to happen to her loved ones for her to see it.

It should not be a surprise to anyone that a movement named after one gender cannot be about gender equality. It has prejudicial language in its very origin.

You are at far more risk from the government from the false accusation of someone with a vagina than any of the other imaginary government boogeymen people concern themselves with - because the right has failed to find an effective counter to victim politics.

I've had this same thought in the past. It always strikes a warning note with me, though... This seems like the same type of argument political correct language fans would make on the other side about how even or language is sexist in that it defaults to masculine pronouns and the like. Only the argument is in reverse. So I choose to ignore the word. You don't need to attack based on such trivialities when the feminist movement gives so many opportunities for criticism based on its actual actions. Plus that allows me not to demonize the many historical and current people who identify as feminist who ARE only interested in equality.

While I have no idea if this story is true or false, the site that it's posted on makes me very suspicious. Redpill is an absurdly misogynistic philosophy that is at least as bad as third wave feminism.

I find it far more likely that his experiences of extended remand and uncaring police were due to the fact that he's poor, as evidenced by the fact that he had to rely on a public defender. Wealthy individuals falsely accused of rape that can afford good lawyers usually have no problem walking out of jail the day after their arrests and then quickly exposing the prosecution for the farce that it is, even in the face of an organized conspiracy against them. The Duke rape case defendants proved that very well.

I wouldn't even bother to point it out, except that feminists like to argue that feminism is about equality and anyone that actually does want equality is a feminist because feminism is defined that way in the dictionary. Those people you identify in your last sentence aren't feminists at all.

The name "feminism" is a predjudicial language fallacy; pointing that out isn't the same fallacy in reverse - although you're right that it's rather trivial compared to their actual positions.

Wealthier people can walk out of jail more easily after they get arrested because they have money to post bail, not because of their lawyers. Bail is just a way to be out of jail awaiting trial, but the wealthy can very easily end up in prison. Aaron Hernandez, for example.

If this guy had more money he'd have simply had more effective means of fighting what happened to him. The treatment he received is because he was male.

As for "absurdly mysogynistic", even taking the word "misogyny" seriously these days is of questionable value.

I'm pretty sure that if this guy had been wealthy rather than a poor nobody the police would have done an actual investigation. It tends to end very badly for everyone involved if you attempt to railroad a rich person in this country on literally zero evidence.

7 years after the Duke case, the prosecutor is disbarred, the lead detective has committed suicide, the corporation that did the DNA tests is bankrupt, and the accuser is serving life in prison. OK, that last one is for murder but if what I've read is any indication, she snapped due to constant harassment over the case and killed her boyfriend when he threw this in her face during an argument.

It's also since come out that Nifong railroaded several other people, including one case where he suppressed evidence that a rape had occurred in order to get a conviction for something else. Nobody cares about any of these, of course, because the victims were poor.

As for misogyny, just go and visit the redpill forum over on Reddit. That philosophy is basically what you get when you ask angry lonely internet neckbeards their opinions on women and combine those views ith the positions of insane antifeminists like Phyllis Schlaefly.

Exactly. Every time I read a feminist blog/forum, I come away thinking they're all a bunch of whacko SJWs, and every time I read some anti-feminist blog/forum (including, at times, this one), I come away thinking they're all a bunch of misogynistic MRAs.

Yeah. The disingenuous argument is that the existence of one negates the existence of the other.

I'm pretty sure that you being pretty sure is not evidence. In reality, it ends very badly most of the time if you try to railroad ANYONE based on zero evidence. The times when it does happen generally pertain more to the poor, but they're still the exception - which is why they're news. The impression that it happens a lot comes from people taking anecdotes and regarding them as representative, and taking the word of everyone that says they were "railroaded". If you go by the word of the convicts at your local penitentiary, almost every single one of them is innocent.

This has far more to do with the publicity the case received than the wealth of the people involved. Just because you are going to Duke does not necessarily mean you are particularly wealthy. Press attention is very whimsical; it goes wherever they think will sell at the moment. Michael Brown, Darren Wilson, Trayvon Martin, and George Zimmerman are not particularly wealthy folks, nor is there good reason to think "Jackie" is either.

Nobody cares about them because Nifong was already disbarred for the Duke rape case, and because they never got any press attention. People do not have time to go around digging through court cases looking for injustices to get outraged about.

I really hate to break this to you, but an obscure reddit group and one particular elderly woman do not compare to a social movement that has basically taken over gender relations in this country since the late 1800s in one form or another, and which unwittingly garners the support of perfectly reasonable people by using a disingenuous double meaning for the term "feminism".

Feminism has managed to insert itself into a wide variety of areas of public policy, frequently by dressing up complete lunatics as academics and political propaganda as research and then relying on fear of bad press (generated by the reactions of feminists themselves) to get the government to allow them in. This is, for example, why Mary Koss has managed to manipulate the definition of "rape" used by the FBI to make it appear that men are almost never raped by women when in fact it's a very common form of sexual violence.

The fact that you're talking about angry, lonely neckbeards is rather telling because that's substantially similar to the language feminists use to describe them. If there were any other avenues of discussion where non-feminist viewpoints could be discussed without being buried in an avalanche of either political correctness or shrieking harpies telling them to "SHUT THE **** UP!" for having the gall to call feminist propaganda into question - or failing those methods, simply pulling the nearest fire alarm to get the <insert event here> shut down, then you might not have reddits with angry lonely neckbeards (which appears to be almost all of reddit on any topic anyhow).

Feminism is notorious for simply shouting down any disagreement with what they call "boiling rage activism" - basically, relying on screaming at people and the sheer weight of their own outrage to silence dissent. It's even mkore prevalent with feminists than with those that use "racism" in the same way.

Your immediate reaction to words like "racist/racism, Misogyny/misogynist, homophobe/homophobia!" should be "Really? What is it that you don't want me to hear?" Those words are used purely for distraction; they are not legitimate argument. If someone really is being a racist/misogynist/homophobe, we want them to have as big a stage as possible to make a fool of themselves so we can point and laugh.

If people are actually listening to their "dangerous ideas" then maybe they aren't actually one of the racists/misogynists/homophobes and it's the SJWs with the real dangerous idea - that we need to suppress "hateful" expression.

I only brought redpill up because that's the site where the original link was posted. The fact that third wave feminists outnumber these people does not make them less crazy, and redpill is much worse than pretty much every form of feminism except maybe the outright "all sex is rape" types. Their philosophy basically goes like this:

1. "All women are whores" - All women choose their partners in a sociopathic and brutally pragmatic fashion - all that matters is money, attractiveness, and social status. Personality and interests are irrelevant, a woman will seek out and stay with the highest ranking man of these three categories that she thinks she can get, even if he's outright physically abusive. Women are also extremely short-sighted and have no loyalty to their relationships. They will immediately jump ship as soon as a higher ranking male shows any interest.

2. Because of this, men should not get married in modern society. Your wife chose you based on how useful you were to her, and once you're married your usefulness goes way down as she can now secure your assets and income for herself through divorce proceedings without having to humor you with sex. The likely result of marriage is that she will immediately gain 50 pounds, stop caring about her appearance, and stop having sex with you, or maintain her appearance in order to facilitate cheating on you as soon as a "better" male shows interest. The likely result of marriage will be you scrimping to pay rent for your one-bedroom apartment after forking out alimony, child support, and the mortgage for your ex-wife's new house. Meanwhile, your ex-wife will move her new boyfriend into the house you paid for and have him raise the children that you only get supervised visits to on alternating weekends.

3. The sexual revolution has been extremely detrimental to society. Since promiscuity is now OK and women are allowed to have as many partners as they want, the result of it is that 20% of the men get to sleep with 80% of the women. The fact that women never look long term and always pick the guy that's richest and strongest right now to have sex with strongly discourages men from planning for the future. Studying to become a doctor, lawyer, or engineer means women will ignore you until you get your degree and job, which is causing men to shun higher education entirely in favor of maximizing their value right now and actually getting some. To combat this, we should bring back the 50s concepts of sacred virginity and villify promiscuity, in order to force women to plan for the future as the guy they choose now will be the guy they're stuck with. Some extreme redpillers actually advocate returning to Victorian norms where women are auctioned off to the most promising men by their fathers, under the theory that the father is much smarter and has much more experience, so he can therefore choose the best partner.

4. Forcing this on women is justified because, as mentioned before, women struggle with logic and can't plan long term. In addition, women are incapable of deriving happiness from success in education or a career in the first place. In order to be happy, a woman must be with a superior male who dominates her. Self-improvement on a woman's part only serves to shrink the pool of available acceptable men as women absolutely can not stand to be with a man that is of lower status than they are. Women should therefore not bother with an education or career, and focus all their efforts on finding the best man they can while they are still young and attractive.

It's not out of a desire to suppress discourse that this gets labeled as misogyny, the feminist equivalent of redpill would be them trying to put men into burqas. They put this story up on their site because of how well it aligns with their philosophy. The woman in this case who sociopathically uses whatever avenue available to her (in this case, false rape accusations) in order to manipulate men into giving her what she wants is how they think all women operate, and they're trying to use this as an example to "prove" that this is how women are.

I only brought redpill up because that's the site where the original link was posted. The fact that third wave feminists outnumber these people does not make them less crazy, and redpill is much worse than pretty much every form of feminism except maybe the outright "all sex is rape" types. Their philosophy basically goes like this:

Dude, I am not going into the specifics of the philosophy of a few crazies, especially not based on your summary of it and I am certainly not going to waste my time on that reddit and try to separate out the actual philosophy from what's simply everyday reddit tripe and shitposting.

The fact that third wave feminists outnumber redpillers and other similar types does not make them less crazy, but that isn't what's important. What's important is that the prevalence of and weak-kneed opposition to feminism has allowed its crazy to be mainstreamed. Feminist crazies have access to official policy and disguise what amounts to religious zealotry as legitimate academic research. I realize this may be hard for you to accept because feminists don't overtly reference the supernatural (although a 'feminist perspective on science' makes no more sense than claiming dinosaurs are a trap by Satan - in both cases observable facts are being subordinated to ideology) and you start breaking out in hives at the mere mention of God, but an abstract look reveals that feminists, and quite a few other forms of SJW regard their political cause as a religious crusade.

Furthermore, feminists have been batshit crazy since they were chasing men out of saloons with truncheons. In the 1800s the preferred feminist/suffragette solution to "men control the property in marriage" was not merely "women should keep control of their own property" but also "... and they should still retain claim on half of the man's plus he should pay their taxes and expenses".

Social justice causes are basically NEVER about equality. They are ALWAYS about the alleged victim group seeing things ONLY from a perspective of its own benefit and pain. This is all fine and dandy when they really just want to be allowed to become a lawyer or a doctor, but it becomes ridiculous when the real problems were solved decades ago and today consist of "screw equal pay for equal work, we just want the equal pay".

Redpill is kinda gross, and full of angst, but there are other more even-keeled people speaking out against the current wave of Social Marxist feminists.

Christina Hoff Sommers is a 2nd wave feminist that has written a few books on the subject that I recommend and speaks out against the hypocrisy and nonsense of the current generation of victim culture enthusiasts.

Essentially, feminism has more or less met most of it's goals and is a western civilization success story. But now that it has nothing real to do, it just seeks power over others. Like, I'll chip in a few bucks to send them to Iran or Saudi Arabia where women really need it.
