Voters decide against "unconditional basic income". The idea that this would encourage people to "pursue creative goals" and "free them from mindless toil" is just amazing. What do they think the money that would pay for this comes from? Worse, this would inevitably spread to other nations far less able to afford it than Switzerland. For such a quiet little nation, it does us all a remarkable service in being an example of well-run national efficiency. |

It's my understanding that basic income trials have worked decently in the few places they've been tested, and i totally get the concept... everyone gets a stipend that is just barely enough to live on, regardless of other income. Other income is then taxed enough to both pay for the basic income and keep inflation from rendering the basic income useless. There are both positive and negative effects from this. Obviously the abjectly lazy are a complete drain on the system, however, more people end up getting a good education and contributing much to society, while minimum wage can be slashed allowing companies to hire general laborers for much less, who do their work (often part time) solely for added luxury. It's a very different system. I wouldn't say it would never work, I just don't believe we can have any idea of the balance of positive vs. Negative effects until it's tried out on a large scale, multiple different ways. And societies make lousy guinea pigs for testing. Failed tests tend to cause a lot of misery. |

Quote: Salaried workers who earned more than basic income would have received no extra money, while children would have received one-quarter of the total for adults. So it's not exactly what you might define as "unconditional". |

shuyung wrote: Quote: Salaried workers who earned more than basic income would have received no extra money That would be welfare, not a "basic income." The concept behind Basic Income is interesting. I can't imagine making it work, but it's a neat idea. It's not necessarily particularly left-wing, either. It's certainly a hybrid system, but many would argue (and I think rightly) that a capitalist economy coupled with a basic income is less socialist than a capitalist economy coupled with a welfare system. Of course, Switzerland has almost no use for it - their current economy works wonderfully...don't rock the boat. |
