On it's own property. Private Universities already do this, and such police forces can only perform the functions of A) normal security guards or B) arrests for public laws passed by the legislature. These are not "religious police" and they are not being pushed by "conservatives". |

Uh huh. Since when do we let churches enforce laws? And would they have jurisdiction that supersedes city police on premises? |

If they're following the same rules as every other private police force, there's nothing wrong with this. Quote: And would they have jurisdiction that supersedes city police on premises? Probably not, for the same reason a city police force doesn't supersede the county or state police, but it's irrelevant. If they're sworn police officers commissioned in the State of Alabama they have to follow the same rules as any other police officer - which includes taking people to court of they're arrested. The court is most assuredly not subject to church authority. What this church has really done is open itself up to immense financial liability. I can already sense leftists and atheists licking their chops and dreaming up ways to gin up a complaint and a lawsuit. I sense this congregation has essentially committed suicide. |

Most universities with their own police forces are public institutions. |

There are some private ones as well, but the relationships between the university police force and the local police districts are quite ironclad in terms of what the university police force can and cannot do, and it never has jurisdiction off the campus boundaries. |

I have no fundamental problem with this. As always, the devil is in the details. A security force for a large institution is not a problem. If the state delegates authority to them, without providing proper oversight, that could be an issue. |
