I am so proud of my son!!...... One of my message boards had a thread dedicated to the day. It got me reflecting on the events of that day, and the events throughout the history since. I also began to reflect on the history of our nation as a whole. I wanted to share the post that I made in that thread with you all, because among the whole of us, whatever our individual ideological beliefs may be, there isn't much in this world that is more important to any of us than these United States of America. Definitely one of the worst days in my life, and one of the worst days to be an American. It is the greatest tragedy in our nation's history. If there is one thing to show from it though, it's that America, as a people, as a whole, will ALWAYS come together in times of adversity. It doesn't matter if you are a Democrat or a Republican, a southerner or a Yankee, black or white, Mexican or Asian, rich or poor, Christian or Jew, it doesn't matter because we are ALL American. It is the coming together and unity that our nation showed after 9/11 that gives me the confidence to know that as a nation, we can pull through anything. We may be bickering back and forth now over the economy, and recessions and tea parties and all of that - but America WILL PULL THROUGH. The American spirit will not allow us to fail. Cynics claim that it "can happen here" - as a means to a political end. They want to push their political agenda by attacking the other. But before America fails, Americans will come together and unite, and this country will pull through. Just as we did in the American Revolution, just as we did through the Civil War, just as we did through 2 World Wars, The Great Depression, Pearl Harbor, and more recently, 9/11, America will pull through. --- On a lighter note - 9/11 is for obvious reasons, a national day of mourning. With that said, it was good to see Derek Jeter break a very historic record in baseball this evening, becoming the Yankees all time hits leader. I am not a Yankees fan by any means, and root against them every opportunity that I get, but on this day, a more appropriate thing could not have happened to a more appropriate person in a more appropriate city. To me, it is the beauty and the blessing of being an American - that even on a day like today, knowing the anniversary of what this date represents, we as a nation can still find something to celebrate. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
