What changes, if any would you like to see in Hellfire?

Is it too crazy and you'd like to see more moderation, banning, topic locking? Is it too restrictive and you'd like to be able to deploy bionic cranky old men to beat up some of the posters here for their dumb views?

Edit - remove sticky ~ T

I voted that I hate it and I hate you simply because my option was not in your post.

If we are going with a moderated board, that's fine. I would like to see a larger moderation staff, a very clearly written set of posting guidelines and procedures for infractions and appeal, and a liberal on your staff, either myself, Aizle, or RD if he were here.

I also think more time is needed to make a call.

I was thinking if everyone wants it moderated fine. If not I'd prefer to leave this as open as is reasonable and make another board for political discussions that can be more closely watched for mean-ness.

Really though it's up to you all, it's your board.

I've noticed since DFK!'s "Fair Warning," the ad hominems stopped almost immediately. So far, it would seem, even the threat of moderation has people behaving. I'm guessing eventually someone will test to see if the moderators mean it, but today this place is downright calm.

Is the moderation staff for Hellfire only Talya and DFK!, or are you (Dash) and Mookhow going to be moderating as well?

This.

Personally I'd prefer to limit my moderating to banning Russian spammers. I'm much more interested in fixing bugs than fixing people's behavior.

Please use fair people, not of any particular political mindset just to appease people.

It's been good so far and I can dig it. Yes, there need to be bannings and or the restricting of people posting in this forum if the need arises.

Also, I don't think there need to be appeals. If you ban someone or restrict them, that's it. We have all been around long enough. The only thing I could see would be if you gave laid out multiple chances. Such as first warning, you are gone for 2 weeks. Second warning, 2 months. Third warning, you are out for good.

I'm not opposed to moderation here, and think it would do some good.

I have no interest in moderating and am giving DFK! and anyone else who becomes a moderator the benefit of the doubt that they will use their newfound powers fairly.

Let's make sure we get two liberals, two conservatives, an atheist, and a Christian creationist on our moderation panel to ensure that any and all mod action dies in committee weeks after the offensive threads have come to a close.

I voted I hate Hellfire based off of past experience. Our moderation is still a relatively new thing, and it's too early to judge.

I think we'll (soon) have 4 moderators, not sure if they'll all peruse Hellfire or not though. I'll mod as needed but I'm typically hands off unless you're really going berserk, or a communist sympathizer.

Might add a 5th moderator but we'll see.

Micheal and Lenas have also been promoted to moderators. We can't form Voltron without a 5th, but I guess we can make due with just the lions for now.

Long post is long. Sorry. There is no TL;DR version :(

Spoilering it so as not to annoy people with the Obnoxiously Massive Wall of Text(TM), though :P

Spoiler:
I didn't actually vote in the poll because I'm not sure what our frame of reference is. Right now at this moment? How it's been, at average, since Glade 4.0? How it's been on average since the previous moderation essentially ceased to exist? My answer might vary quite a bit depending.

I'm with Taly in that I sincerely hope that just the threat of moderation will be enough to bring everything in line. I really don't want to see anyone banned or probated, but I feel quite strongly that if the circumstances merit it, it needs to happen. I don't think anyone wants a "nanny" board, or for warnings/suspensions to fly left and right for every little minor snark. That said, the tone really needs to remain appropriately civil. I'm not sure how to define what that is. It's like trying to define pornography. You can't say what, exactly, it is, but you know it when you see it :p

In the long run, more work needs to be done than just taming the wild west. This isn't really a matter of moderation, though, so I'm not sure how to "fix" it. We need for this place to stop being thought of as the "wild west" to begin with. This is not the place where you should expect for discussions to be heated. This is not just the place where you should go if you're looking for a fight.

This place has become the Glade's ghetto, and the only people who have stayed here are either those that want a ghetto or those that can tolerate a ghetto. Either way, a ghetto is the inevitable consequence. This place has "brand issues", and something needs to be done to fix this. A lot of people who used to post here no longer do, and the affects have not positive. We need to work on attracting those people back to this area of the board, but that's obviously never going to happen unless we can first honestly make the case that we cleaned up the mess.

I have another opinion on the matter, but I'm sure it's not a popular one. I'm not even sure that it's feasible at this point, nor is it even something that I would suggest doing any time in the immediate future, but...

Well, I actually kind of liked it better when the "Real Life" forum contained both our general posting and topics of news, politics, etc. I believe that part of the reason this place has a tendency towards ... degneration is that (again with the ghetto analogy) we've segregated it out to where the "decent folk" don't have to see it. A mixed forum, I felt, had several benefits.

  • If nothing else, it prevents having a forum that's filled with nothing but controversial, high explosives topics. You get a mental break as you go from topic to topic, giving people a chance to cool off a little between posts
  • It prevents the more, ah, civil members of our community from vacating the premises unless they're willing to give up the Glade entirely. Yeah, that's kind of hostage-taking, I admit. But the more moderate (not necessarily in the political sense) posters we have active in this area, I think the less likely it is for things to spin so far out of control. They can (and I believe would) act as something like a brake in the conflict spiral pattern -- a rock in that particular stream, which foils its tendency to flow headlong down its inevitable path.
  • Intentionally or not, separating out this forum sends a message that this place somehow operates under different rules or has different expectations. "This is the ghetto, so I'm going to act like I'm in a ghetto."

I realize that's probably not going to happen. But at the very least, I'd like to make a seemingly pedantic request -- can we have the title of this sub-forum changed to something that denotes its subject, rather than it's (bad) behavior? "News, Politics, and Religion" or something like that. I can't think of a very appropriate descriptive title, but I'm sure someone can.

Edit: Argh, broken list tags.

I voted as if the newly installed moderators are prior to the poll. As such, it's fine as it is. We all know the rules of common decency. If the Shadow Council deems someone not being civil, so be it. I'd just like a post as to what the offense was, and no discussion about it. I believe a first warning (in say, a month) should be just tjat, a warning any subsequent incivility should be subject to consequences - no appeals.

Abstained since I'm a mod now.

That being said, I agree almost totally with Stathol. You either have rules or you don't. You don't suspend them in a special section, at least IMO.

Maybe if this forum is moderated it'll be worth posting in again. Hellfire has been such a sewer that I've barely been able to read it for months now...

Monte,
I'd label myself as Liberal. Just so you know. That said, a moderator's personal stance is insignificant. We're not here to mod your opinions, only how you express them.

My opinion is that this should be a normal section, just as any other, with discussion and friendly debate between points on news and politics.

I don't think it needs moderation as in a nanny figure. I just think it needs clear rules as to posting, and concequences for breaking the rules. People should be able to moderate themselves.

With one notable exception, I think we usually do a pretty good job of moderating ourselves.

I, personally, hate it. But that's mostly because of a few really bad apples that make the place more of a chore to read. I rarely participate in most of the discussions in Hellfire...but I still like to read stuff. But it gets really old when the same people come in and ruin perfectly good discussions with their hate and lies. Maybe the moderation will help. It remains to be seen, however.

As long as the mark topics read button keeps working, I dont' have a problem with anything here. Most topics are played out past the first page for me. Every now and then I will keep reading something because Lord Doom is being all cryptic but that is about it.

We're working on some forum posting guidelines. This is actually currently covered in the present draft under a heading "External Baggage." If/when we get it all ironed out, They'll be posted for everyone.
