Sir, your behavior smells strongly of asshattery! I also declare that you could be thought to be engaged in douchebaggery.

So wait. Hellfire is being less moderated and the posters are being called upon to "police" themselves?

I want to be sure I completely understand the differences...

I believe Hellfire is as it has been since Moderation has taken effect, but Heckfire is Hellfire Lite: Hellfire with much less leniancy for sparks.

Neither do I. And I'm a moderator. /shrug

We haven't exactly been lenient in Hellfire since we added moderation to this board.

I believe that Hellfire has not changed at all.

Heckfire is the kinder, gentler hellfire.

That's at least my read on it. YMMV

Since I don't fully get it or quite understand the differences, I guess it's a good think I don't often post much in Hellfire, and even when I do I usually abide by whatever rules that seemed to have been in place since it's inception.

I think this Hell/Heckfire idea is going to cause more confusion and moderator headaches that it is going to solve.

Foamy, I would proffer your personal solution to Hellfire is one that probably works the best: limit your exposure to it to what you can stand.

Even given my posting in here, sometimes I just log to check my PM's and read Sports, Ent and Gaming. I think Hellfire was fine as is, just my 2cp.

If anything I'd like to see moderation in hellfire be more lax than it was before, limited to the more obvious transgressions. Heckfire on the other hand, will be more of a quick 30 day ban should people get personal or obnoxious.

The distinction is more for the posters. You should have your expectations set for both.

I got that the moderation was backing out of hellfire to a large degree (similar to past incarnations), and a slightly stricter moderation than present was being imposed in heckfire.

This way the people who want 'lighter' discussions can keep to heckfire, and those that feel they have sufficiently thick skins can come here.

Post subject:  Re: Mirror: Thoughts on Heckfire/Hellfire

Yeah, that's basically how I see it too. The distinction is one of tone and expectations. If a thread is relaxed and conversational, it's a Heckfire thread. If it's kind of tense and argumentative, it's a Hellfire thread. And if a Heckfire thread starts off conversational but one or more posters begin getting argumentative, they should start a mirror thread in Hellfire and take their debate over there instead.

*Edit: Which isn't to say that all Hellfire threads should be argumentative or that we should feel free to be jerks in here. It's just that people posting in Hellfire know going in that things might get tense, whereas in Heckfire, people know going in that they have to mind their tone a bit more.

Post subject:

So basically, this forum is where I can say that one of the posters in this thread is a Kool-Aid drinking liberal fascist moron who somehow manages have, if its possible, even less understanding of global political economics than Keynes. And then claim it isn't a personal attack because it's all true?

Author:  Dash [ Mon Feb 08, 2010 12:53 pm ]
Post subject:

Yes I'm sure the next issue will be spelling out the rules, which is already giving me a headache thinking about who will have arguments over the technicalities of is that a flame or a troll.

Look just keep it sub ridiculous in here, make use of ignore/foe and expect to be pushed if you offer controversial opinions. In heckfire, play nice. You can discuss and argue but do so in a civil tone.

So if Lonedar called you a "Kool-Aid drinking liberal fascist moron who somehow manages have, if its possible, even less understanding of global political economics than Keynes" are you going to melt? Go to Heckfire. Are you going to have a 14 page rant with him calling each other names? Die in a fire, both of you! Get your nonsense out here and vent yeah, but dont crap on every damn thread.

Good luck, Mods.

I think you're going to need it.

I think it will actually ease up the load a lot.

Only if things devolve really badly (which they have only ever done a few times, revolving around a few specific individuals), will moderation be needed here, it seems.

And with the two forums, giving everyone an alternative, people can be much more harshly moderated in Heckfire without feeling their freedom is being trampled on.

Yeah I can see how this may be ambiguous or arbitrary to some but you're all over thinking it. This makes it much easier on the mods as I see it.

For instance, here is an example right off the bat of a report:

Quote:
Direct Flaming. Okay, XXXX earlier report on YYYY being a pain in the arse might have been somewhat ambiguous, but now YYYYY is directly violating forum rules.

(names changed to protect the innocent and non innocent!) I will presume this is a testing of the edges since the grand re-opening. If this offends you, my suggestion would be to then ignore this poster. You're free to express yourself here pretty much as you wish... save for the out of control instances we've had every so often. If you need hard and fast rules, well then you're probably heading for a ban ;)

I've never liked moderation in any forms - as before it leads to no moderation and more arguments because of (or the lack of) perceived moderation by any and all individuals.

If you can't take the heat stay out of hellfire. That should be it.

Or how about, stop acting like a bunch of pricks, so there's no heat to take. We can self moderate, and someone will get out of line periodically, but some posters act like pricks constantly and need to be ignored, at a minimum, strung up by their testicles, at a maximum.

Then ignore them.

You know, man up. If you can't take hot discussion and you know there will be some don't go in, if you can't trust yourself to not go in, don't post, if you can't trust yourself to not post then foe/ people, if you can't be bothered to do any of this then continue to whine to have other people cater to your issues and clamor for moderators or policies or other crap.

If you believe we can self moderate and you are getting upset about discussion then I think you need to rethink the idea of self-moderation and start at the paragraph above.

Agreed, provided there's another forum (i.e. "Heckfire") where the burden runs the other way. That is, if you can't keep your cool, don't go in.
