Has anyone heard of this?

http://www.pcworld.com/article/189961/b ... _hype.html

Quote:
A Silicon Valley start-up is getting ready to unveil an energy device this week that executives say could one day power individual homes and businesses while replacing the traditional power grid.

Bloom Energy, one of the 26 companies named in the World Economic Forum's list of top 2010 Tech Pioneers , took some of the wraps off its Bloom Box in a story that ran last night on the CBS television show 60 Minutes .

An interview with K.R. Sridhar, CEO of Bloom Energy, during the piece has created significant online buzz, including descriptions of the Bloom Box device as the "Holy Grail of clean energy."

Bloom Energy is expected to unveil the new device on Wednesday.

Sridhar said the box is mostly a collection of fuel cells that use oxygen and fuel to create electricity without creating any emissions. Oxygen is drawn into one side of the cell, while a fuel, such as a natural gas or bio-fuel, is drawn into the other side. The two combine within the cell and produce a chemical reaction that creates energy without any burning or combustion.

Sridhar said in the interview with 60 Minutes he's hoping that within 10 years Bloom Boxes are placed in backyards or basements to power homes. He estimated the cost of systems for individual homes at about $3,000.

Sridhar also noted that 20 corporate big hitters, including FedEx Corp., Wal-Mart Stores Inc, eBay Inc. and Google Inc. are already using Bloom Boxes on a trial basis.

Google spokeswoman Niki Fenwick said in an e-mail to Computerworld that an undisclosed number of Bloom Boxes installed at the company are already supplying a "portion" of the energy needs at its Mountain View campus.

"This is just another on-site renewable energy source that we're exploring to help power our facilities," she added. "We have a 400 kilowatt [Bloom Box] installation on Google's main campus that delivers clean and affordable power. Over the first 18 months, the project has had 98% availability and delivered 3.8 million kilowatts of electricity."

Some sort of zero-emission home energy generator?

Heh, how is using natural gas renewable?

And I'm skeptical on how this can have no emissions... Something is happening, there has to be a byproduct.

Yeah, I read as much as I could on it. I couldn't find where the cost per kwh compared to other power methods and what the lifespan of the thing is. Also, I was burned several years ago by the cold fusion palladium cell thing, so I'm reserving judgment.

Because it will run out.

Yeah, that was a miss-type on my part- the article refers to natural gas as a renewable source of energy.

After reading it and a few other articles, I'm really skeptical about the 'no emissions' thing.

It's bunk, at least on the no emissions thing.

It's combining oxygen and fuels such as natural gas. You're going to be spitting out carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide one way or another.

You could re burn carbon monoxide and oxygen at high temp to put out only CO2, but wait - it doesn't "burn".

Maybe it places romantic atomic music and leave the atoms alone for a while?

It started in Hellfire, it wasn't moved here. I thought it would have been perfectly safe in Tech.

Really? Strike my comment then, I thought I posted in tech the first time.

I didn't see it in Tech. My bad. I typically post all "news" in Hellfire. I am curious about how these fuel cells will eliminate combustion too.

Well, you can use catalysts to sort of bypass actual combustion. I'm not sure if you can make that claim when oxygen is one of the inputs, though.

In fact, I have no idea what they consider "without burning or combustion" to be, considering burning is defined as applying combustion, and combustion is descriptive of an exothermic reaction between a fuel and anything that readily transfers oxygen atoms. Given that the fuel cell "uses oxygen and fuel," and any energy-producing reaction must be exothermic, I think they have no idea what they're talking about. The article author, at the very least, and quite likely, the people behind the start-up.

Is rust burning?

Are compost piles burning?

It all depends on the definitions you use.

Exothermic is a key part of the definition. I don't believe rusting is exothermic.

"Rust" is really a family of iron/oxygen compounds with various ratios of: Fe, O, and H (as in water).
All the "rusting" reactions are exothermic to the tune of from about -60 to -190 kcal/mol That is they
all liberate a substantial amount of heat.

The heat released from rusting steel belts and beads in tires can actually start tire fires.

People try to make combustion into some sort of special process, when it is truly just rapid and uncontrolled oxidation.

You totally ignore the most compelling aspect of combustion that truly separates it from all other chemical sequences...

The "sparkley" quotient.

Come on, say it with me....
