So my ex left behind 3 goldfish and a beta when she moved out about 4 months ago. I am fine with the goldfish as they have a nice aquarium and are very low maintenance. The beta however lives in a stinky bowl that is forever algae filled and I don't want to be bothered to take care of it. Since she won't take them I have 3 options. Flush the beta (my inclination) Leave the beta alone (it seems to live on the algae as I haven't fed it in two months) Put the beta in with the goldfish (a quick query of the internet seems to indicate they can coexist) Opinions welcome below obviously. |

There's a 4th option. Try and find a new home for the beta and/or goldfish. Beta can be aggressive, so co-mingle with care. |

I would clean the bowl out and give it to a neighborhood kid. (with parental permission of course.) Betas are really low maintenance so you will have made a little kids day. |

You can see if a local pet store will take the Betta. |

That's kind of what betas live in. If you don't want to deal with them, though, it's easy enough to pass them off to other people. |

Oh I've already exhausted all other venues of giving animals away (she left: 4 kittens, 3 cats; 3 goldfish; the beta and 13 hermit crabs). |

I can't help but say this: she left you with crabs? How inconsiderate. |

Yeah, Betas are nice to keep around, because they like really stagnant, algae-filled water. If you clean the tank, you're likely to kill it, in fact. Just leave it be, or flush it. |

You could always make crab soup... hehe I'm sure there are charities and stuff around you where you could give away a fish, otherwise normal pet shops should be able to resell it and would normally take them in. (thats how I use to make extra cash breeding hamsters) |

You breed hamsters? Why do I find that slightly disturbing and adorable at the same time? |

Once again democracy (representative or otherwise) has proven its merits. Per the will of the people the beta joins the goldfish in a happy school tonight. If it eats one of them then its getting a one-way ticket to the waste-treatment plant. |

If it eats one of them then its getting a one-way ticket to the waste-treatment plant. There are better ways to euthanize a fish. Quote: Putting the Freeze on Sparkles Freezing is a commonly used method for euthanizing warm water fish. To freeze your fish, freeze water in a small bag until the ice is slushy. Then place your fish in the water and continue to freeze it. The folks at Web Web Media advocate using the freezer but other people feel that this method must be somewhat discomforting to the fish. Out of all the "old-school" methods, this process seems most humane. The AVMA does not advocate freezing fish as an acceptable method of euthanasia; the only way they would approve of cooling would be to deep freeze an animal already under deep anesthesia. The method I've used: Quote: here comes a time in every aquarist's life when a fish that can no longer recover from disease or injury must be euthanized. This is no easy task but it can be done humanely and peacefully without stress to fish or aquarist. The best method is a two-step process. First, anesthetize the fish with clove oil so that it is sleeping and unable to feel pain; then introduce a clear grain alcohol like vodka to ensure the fish will not wake up.
This method is commonly misrepresented as mixing clove oil and vodka together. That is incorrect. Clove oil must be introduced first, allowing the fish to fall asleep before introducing vodka. Vodka will be stressful for a fish that is not anesthetized. Clove oil, or eugenol, is available at most drug stores and is sold as a toothache remedy. It has been used for years as a fish anesthetic for surgeries and tagging procedures. Clove oil will put a fish to sleep and ensure it feels no pain. The fish can wake up from this sleep if removed from the clove bath, however. The last step of adding the vodka will ensure the fish expires. Here are the steps for fish up to 3 inches (7.6 cm) in length: 1. Add tank water to a measuring cup or mixing bowl. Measure the amount of tank water you add to the cup or bowl and make a note of it. Place the fish in the container. If the fish is in a clear cup, place a dark towel around the cup to calm the fish. 2. Fill a small, clean jar or bottle with tank water, leaving some room at the top. You might use a baby food jar or pill bottle. Put 1 drop of clove oil in the jar or bottle, cap, and shake vigorously. The clove oil should emulsify, turning the water milky white. Gently pour about 1/4 of this emulsified mixture into the fish's container. The fish will begin listing as it starts to fall asleep. Let the fish be for about 10 minutes. The fish should be resting on the bottom of the tank when it has fallen asleep. It will look dead, but if you watch closely, its gills will be breathing once every few seconds. If after 10 minutes the fish is still rising off the bottom and swimming intermittently, retrieve the jar or bottle of emulsified clove oil, re-shake, and add the same dose to the fish's container. Wait again. 3. Once the fish is asleep on the bottom, add 20-25% white grain alcohol. For example, if the fish is in 8 oz (240 ml) of water, add 2 oz (60 ml) of vodka. Let the fish stay there for at least 20 minutes. 4. Check the fish carefully after 20 minutes for any gill movement. If there is no gill movement over a 60 second period, the fish has expired. |
