It's tone is inflammatory, it doesn't really serve the board's new kinder, gentler environment, and it's not that hard to type the name out. Liberalism is a completely valid and respectable political ideology, and if we want to engage each other in pleasant conversation and even vigorous but respectful debate, I don't think it's too much to ask to keep the inflammatory descriptors to a minimum. You'll note I have stopped referring to the Tea Party protesters as Teabaggers, for example, and I think that others here could return that common courtesy.

In the sincere spirit of a nicer Hellfire club, I suggest people use a little more of their time to be more respectful to the Liberals who post here.

Run a poll on whether people find it inflammatory first, would be my suggestion.

Lib is shorthand for liberal. That's how I use it.

I also use Repubs for Republicans as Reps is easy to get conflated with representative.

Teabaggers is definitely derogatory, and not even in the same league as "lib".

I think the only person that I've ever seen offended by the use of "lib" is you.

It's a perfectly usuable abreviation in my opinion, the only problem is Libertarians could also be libs. Would we be 'tarians :)

A popularity contest should determine if it's inflammatory?

And yet, it never reads like that. There is no reason to use the shorthand with a keyboard. I don't see you commonly shorthanding other long political names, like conservative, libertarian, or really anything other than liberal, despite that name being shorter than the other.

That's possible, but Repub is only one letter shy of Liberal spelled out.

That's entirely subjective. I'm sure some folks love being teabagged and love to teabag.

I don't understand how that makes a difference.

Even without context, you've just defeated yourself here. If you find the use of "lib" as a passive-aggressive label, I suggest examining your own abundant use of labeling.

Indeed. If we're going to start getting rid of terms because one person finds them inflammatory, I want "racist" and "homophobe" banned as well.

Lib is not an insult. You are the only person I've ever heard make that claim.

To whoever makes this rule, if lib is claimed to be insulting or a flame then Diamondeye's suggestion needs to go hand in hand, along with a few others.

Dumbest thread ever.

The reason it makes a difference is one person doesn't get to define language. If I came here and decided that the word red was offensive to people of my hair color, and demanded nobody use it, instead referring to it as #FF0000, I wouldn't have much of a case. I do not believe we'll be moderating the use of the short form "Lib." Uncle Fester makes the most valid case for not using it, as it is nonspecific and could easily refer to a Libertarian, or the Liberal Party of Canada, etc. But we're not going to be policing accuracy or clarity.

Speaking of reds, I have a question. Why is it reds are either full-on ***** or the nicest girls you ever meet? Seriously, I can't think of a single red that has been middle of the road.

We can be both at the same time. (And in reality, it's probably closer to #BF8000.)

I married one. Granted, there are times when she is pull your hair out frustrating, but she balances that out with a loving, caring and thoughtful side like I've never seen. I like the balance and being kept on my toes.

Hmm...that looks too yellow/beige.

In the interest of science, I ran a median filter over your Flora and Fauna pic, and according to Gimp, your hair is roughly:

Shadows: #381006
Midtones: #59230b
Highlights: #8c522c

Or, on average, about: #5F2C14

I hereby propose that each mod have their own unique mod posting color, and that This shall be the color of Talya's mod posts

Montegue, a poll wouldn't be a popularity contest -- it would be an investigative measure to determine if the majority of posters see/indend an inflammatory tone when using the term.

In other words, everybody else here thinks you're reading a tone that's not intended. Paranoia doesn't get to define the language.

Monty seems to forget that democracy is in effect a popularity contest.

It's unfortunate that people on the board refuse to type a few extra letters for the sake of polite discourse.

Except that based on the anecdotal evidence of this thread, you are the only one who considers it impolite.

Perhaps if there was a poll to provide statistical (and thus more representative) evidence....

It's also unfortunate that people want to control how others type.

It's really not that important. I had hoped others were willing to meet halfway on being polite and respectful, but it's pretty clear that's not the case. Sad, but not unexpected. I thought I would ask, anyway.
