God Hates Nerds: Your Friendly Salvation Reminder

Turns out geekiness is so not next to Godliness, or so says the Westboro Baptist Church.

The church will be protesting outside of this year's Comic-Con in San Diego next week in an attempt to stop the nation's nerds from worshiping superheros. (Because that's what we do, apparently.) Led by Reverend Fred Phelps, the congregation will gather to collectively point out our sins for a whole 45 minutes on Thursday afternoon. From 1:15 to 2 p.m., the group will be outside to remind us all to repent of our comic sins.

"Are you kidding?! If these people would spend even some of the energy that they spend on these comic books, reading the Bible, well no high hopes here," Phelps posted on the WBC site. "They have turned comic book characters into idols, and worship them they do! Isaiah 2:8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: 9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not. It is time to put away the silly vanities and turn to God like you mean it. The destruction of this nation is imminent - so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry."

Right. Because C.S. Lewis never wrote Mere Christianity and Charles Schulz teaching Sunday school and writing Bible-themed comics was all a huge hoax. Quick, someone get this guy a copy of The Comic Book Bible and a hug from Felicia Day.

Lets see, a self-promoting jerk of an intolerant evangelist versus some of the brightest and nerdiest debaters in the country. He has no clue what he is getting himself into. This could turn out very embarrassing for him.

I hope it does. A bunch of the comic book fans probably know more about the bible than he does. Have you ever known serious nerd fans to be withdrawn in an argument about details in their literature?

Going after the nerd herd is a totally different project than going after grieving parents and family.

I don't see this going quite the way Phelps intends. It will, though, be interesting to watch.

Damn! Not enough notice! I'd so drive down there and wave my sign in their faces!! There are not too many people in this world that I truly hate, but this group is among the "special ones"!

And again, must we be the people who take shots at former members who are no longer around to defend themselves?

Oh, right. It's Hellfire.

Rofflemayo.

You know, normally I'm on the "it's uncouth to disparage absentee or former members," but...well, it's Beryllin. Against my standard nature, I suspend my ire.

Interestingly, I find the reception to my post intriguing, which is kind of why I worded it that way.

1) Because while I didn't like Bery, I think it'd be interesting if he really did appear in such a venue, particularly given his apparent proclivities as a gamer.

2) Second, I disagree totally with his banning, considering there is no current reason under the present paradigm to actually ban some one from this board.

For the record I disapprove of taking potshots at people here or not. So the comment receives the same ire that people who take shots at Monte (here or not) get.

I dont see why we have to beat people up, particularly in absentia.

What makes you assume I was "taking a shot" at him?

Yeah, well. I'm not proud of it, but I'll get by. It's not like me getting up in arms about it is going to do anything anyway, so I may as well enjoy a funny off-hand comment.

Beryllin requested that he be permanently banned. He decided to be a pain until his request was honored. He was obviously unhappy with the Glade and could not remain in control of himself to just not visit the Glade. After a lot of discussion, the management decided to honor his request.

Hush, Micheal. People want to hold on to their mistaken beliefs! It's no fair to inject truth into the conversation!

An honest man is a respectable man.

As for what to do? I think someone should put together a band a la the Revenge of the Nerds Tri-Lam talent show band and do that song right in the middle of their speech from an adjacent stage:
