Discard the spin, just dealing with the raw statement. I'm not saying he's wrong, nor am I saying he's right. It's a fantastic sound bite, and it is going to get significant mileage. "The Party of Food Stamps" VS. "The Party of Paychecks" Impact politics! http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101007/ap_on_el_ge/us_gingrich_food_stamps Quote: Gingrich brands Democrats 'party of food stamps' By Brian Bakst MINNEAPOLIS – Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is advising Republican candidates on November's ballots to frame the choice for voters between Democrats as "the party of food stamps" while selling the GOP as "the party of paychecks." With a month to go before the election, Gingrich brought his branding effort to Minnesota on Wednesday. He raised money for Republican gubernatorial nominee Tom Emmer and the state GOP during a private fundraiser. He told reporters later that Republicans can campaign as the party of opportunity. "Most Americans would like to get a paycheck," Gingrich said. "Most Americans would not like to be forced to have food stamps handed out by liberal Democrats." Gingrich is considering a run for president in 2012 and is about to head off on a 12-city "Jobs Here, Jobs Now" tour with stops in South Carolina, Georgia, Iowa and Wisconsin, among other places. Gingrich this week distributed a memo to Republican hopefuls saying they should use the final month to stress tax and spending cuts as a way to spur job growth while attacking Democratic policies as detrimental that effort. He blamed policies by a Democratic Congress and President Barack Obama's administration for pushing the number of people receiving food stamps to historic highs. U.S. Department of Agriculture Data show 41.8 million people were on government nutrition assistance programs in July, up from about 32 million when Obama took office. "It's perfectly fair to say they are earning the title of the party of food stamps," he said. "By contrast, we have historically since Ronald Reagan of 1980 been the party of job creation." Hari Sevugan, press secretary for the Democratic National Committee, said Democrats are pulling the country "out of the deep ditch" the current administration inherited from a Republican White House. "Under Republican economic policies, nearly 800,000 Americans lost their job every month," Sevugan said. "Under Democratic economic policies, we are adding jobs every month. That's the choice." Thoughts? |

Discard the spin? Spin IS politics. This is just another frame for the debate and Republicans are keeping Dems on the defensive. Next byte will prob be how the Dems are using creative accounting and circumventing procedures to get their programs funded. However, Gingrich is in the ballpark on this one. |

If by adding jobs you mean "losing jobs at a slightly slower rate if you don't count all the temporary census workers hitting the rolls" then he is correct. |

This in my mind is the primary problem with politics. Everyone goes to the sound bite, because the peabrained average voter can't be troubled to listen to a well reasoned and thought out argument and only remembers stupid gimicky one liners like these. Much less having the mental fortitude to actually understand things like facts and the big picture. |

The supposedly-peabrained average voter is not so addled that sound bites like this convince them all by themselves. Contrary to the conceits of some people here,t he average person is not a moron, nor are the posters here as far above the masses as some prefer to imagine. The sound bites work because they let the average voter know tht this guy is already in general agreement with him. The average person may not dig into the issues far enough to find out if they really agree with this guy enough to vote for him, but that's due to a number of issues, and rarely is stupidity. |

God help me I still like Newt. Not for POTUS or anything but I like him. It's a good sound bite. Whats sad is, that the Republicans can still get away with saying it only because of how awful the Democrats are. How many of us are fooled that the Republicans are really a party of small government? On the bright side, it's encouraging that saying things like this is considered politically expedient. I mean ****, you even have people like Russ Feingold claiming kinship with the Tea Party these days: http://althouse.blogspot.com/2010/10/ru ... enger.html |

Vice President Joe Biden yesterday in Dickson City, Pennsylvania: "I challenge Karl Rove to tell me that this money isn't coming from billionaires and millionaires, insurance companies, oil companies, major executives." Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders on MSNBC, October 8: "The Democrats had better win, or else we're going to see more outsourcing. You're going to see more tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires. You're going to see more deregulation, so we can have another Wall Street disaster or a BP disaster." President Obama in Madison, Wis., September 28: "This is again an example of where come November we've got to start making some choices because if for example we give tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires that cost us $700 billion that we don't have . . . " A Democratic National Committee ad, released October 10: "Karl Rove, Ed Gillespie: They're Bush cronies. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce: They're shills for big business. And they're stealing our democracy. Spending millions from secret donors to elect Republicans to do their bidding in Congress. It appears they're even taking secret foreign money to influence our elections. It's incredible, Republicans benefiting from secret foreign money." Barbara Boxer, Senate debate, September 1: "You see my opponent fighting for the billionaires, the millionaires, for the companies who ship jobs overseas." |

I guess Democrats conviently forgot where a substantial amount of donations for Obamas campagin came from. Or about how his website conviently "forgot" to turn off international credit card donations. Or the questionable prepaid cards. Or the donations from big businesses, trial lawyers and healthcare providers. It's like Democrats in this case have severe amnesia. |

President Obama has been stumping for Senator Reid in Nevada, and in response Reid's opponent, Sharron Angle, released this add. "Welcome to Nevada, Mr. President." |

If you think gay and lesbian people need to be locked up and shot in the head, vote for Bill Brady.”
