Since he's presumably going to be taking money from this potential roommate, I don't see how it's not illegal to declare you'll only enter into that business relationship with a person of a specific religion. |

If it were a tenant in a purely rental property, Xeq, I'd agree. This is not a strictly business relationship, however, since they will be sharing a home. I think that excuses some discrimination. After all, the law already recognizes gender discrimination in such cases. Why not religion? |

It's called the right of free association. Funny how liberals find that anathema. |

I must be discriminating against everyone. I have no roommate, don't want one, and have already rejected people who wanted to rent a room from me, even though I hadn't advertised one for rent. |

If this were a rental with her living separately or even a half duplex i'd be more against this lady. However the implication is she's essentally sharing her home so that should grant her more leeway than a normal land lord. |

How about people have the following right: Free Association. Get the **** over it. There's no "more against or less against" this lady ... none, what so **** ever. I can talk to who I want. Do business with the people I want. And Associate with the people I choose to associate. Anything else is **** ASININE. |

For good or ill we decided as a country to do away with whites only lunch counters and Employers with "Need no Irish" in their windows. If you don't like that than maybe the law should be changed (and maybe it should) but for now it's the dynamic we have. |

One would think "Free Association" would be right up there with "Free Speech" as one of those inalienable rights. |

Do you not rob someone else of their right of free association by refusing them service or admittance? |

No, you don't. Association is a two-way street. |

If it's a two way street are you allowed to just throw up a roadblock on it and say, piss off wanker? Your friend whitey-steve can saddle on in but you best mosey on down to the black-cafe? |

Absolutely. How can you force one person to associate with another. Would you be for state mandated best friends? |

If you are free to choose whom to allow in your home, you exercise your right to freedom of association. |

Basically, yes. Then the cafe owner is depriving himself of buisness. That's not necessarily true. If the area is racist enough the fact that the owner doesn't let in niggers might attract more customers than he's ejecting. |

Elmarnieh wrote: Absolutely. How can you force one person to associate with another. Would you be for state mandated best friends? Certainly not, but if you're operating a business that's open to the "public" and the government treats you as such, then the business needs to be open to the whole public. There's nothing wrong with an aquireable standard like a dress code, or saying you can't smoke or drink alcohol, or play loud music in the spare room I'm leasing to you (provided that's all in the lease upfront. |

Businesses aren't open to the public. I really wish I understood where the hell that idea came from in the first place. |

Probably from the signs on the front of them that say "open". |

Still doesn't mean they're open to the public at large. |

Khross wrote: Still doesn't mean they're open to the public at large. Yes actually it does. If you put a sing out saying "open", you're inviting all and sundry to come into your business. Now, if you put another sign out placing restrictions on that, that should be fine. In fact, it IS pretty much ok when that restriction is on teenagers, but apparently not on anyone else. |
