DOT exploring technology that would disable cell phones in cars
By Sara Jerome - 12/03/10 10:52 AM ET

The Transportation Department is looking into technology to disable cell phones in vehicles, according to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

"There's a lot of technology out there that can disable phones and we're looking at that," LaHood said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"A number of those people came to our distracted driving meeting here in Washington and that's one way," he said.

LaHood seemed to suggest that this technology has a good chance of making its way into cars.

"I think it will be done," he said.

Wireless companies see signal scrambling technology as a blunt instrument in the fight against distracted driving, pointing out that cell phones are just one distraction in the car.

UPDATE: DOT spokeswoman Olivia Alair wrote in confirming that the the department is examining this technology. She added that the department has "no intention" at this point to require it. She pointed to a statement from LaHood that said his campaign has focused on "raising awareness, getting good laws on the books, stepping up enforcement, and most importantly, taking personal responsibility."

I second the **** you DOT.

Passengers can use the phone just fine. In fact... when Lisa and I go out... she is officially the call placer.

Can they disable putting on makeup and fixing your hair or reading the newspaper?

Or talking to your passenger?

That's great - nobody ever uses their cell phones for emergencies on the highway.

Where you'd likely see this technology come into play would be with commercial vehicles, not personal vehicles. That's if it ever gets past the investigation stage.

I second Aizle. Car companies wont allow it to happen. They're putting too much money into things like the Ford Sync systems.

How are they not going to allow it to happen when they government is part owner?

**** the DoT. I'd immediately disable something like that if it was in my car, and I don't use my cell phone for anything but nav and pandora while I'm driving.

Yeah - and if there's an emergency, how will I know I need to pull over and take the call/call them back if my phone never gives me any kind of notification?

And more to the point though, how do you make it so it just turns off the cell phone inside the car? Isn't it kind of an interference field sort of thing?

Turn every car on the road into a mobile dead spot... what does that do to people walking on the sidewalk when a car goes by?

This will be terrible for the economy. It will destroy many providers, and cost jobs. Additionally, it will harm the economy outside of sector. Do you have any idea how much business is conducted in the car?

Soundproof walls surrounding all passenger seats.

Heh. Define commercial vehicles. When I had a company car as a field tech, three quarters of my phone conversations, and more of my call dispatches, were transmitted to me while driving. Maybe for truckers, who have scheduled routes and communicate via CB, but that's about it.

No, if anything, this is going to be something insipid like mandated discounts on car insurance rates offered if you install these.

Do payphones even exist anymore outside military bases where people use phone cards to call from them?

Seriously it has to have been 10 years since I saw one.

In any case, this may be the most ham-handed example of government overinvolvement in relatively minor social problems ever, even if it is only research. Talk about using a sledgehammer to swat a fly.

If this was really put into effect, there'd be tons of websites showing people how to disable this technology, uninstall it, or pretend to install it.

Close, but no. See, the front passenger is still able to distract the driver.

Actually, the other day I was thinking it had been quite a while since I had seen one of those God-awful 1-800-COLLECT begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              1-800-COLLECT      end_of_the_skype_highlighting commercials. Then I remembered, only fugitives use payphones anymore. And even they don't. Because the payphones that still exist are put there to catch fugitives.

As for the secondary market that will pop up to support disabling what are essentially delayed sabotage devices, yet again, the government creates a secondary market to channel and waste more resources unnecessarily.
