I think "Don't piss off the Internet" is a pretty important lesson they should learn. |

How exactly does Visa intend to "bring down" wikileaks? |

If it's as effective as the attck on MasterCard... it'll be a bust. Just got finished talking to someone who works there, it's being reported internally that no transactions were lost or delayed. AND, anonops.net is down. Go figure. |

I don't think "Anon" was concerned with people's transactions going through. That's obviously handled by different systems than the website, anyway. There is still a lot of potential lost revenue for MC/Visa by destroying traffic to their websites. I've got small-time clients that would lose thousands a day if they didn't have their website up, I can only imagine how much traffic the card companies are missing out on. |

Since the card companies are just doing transactions for providers, what are they missing out on? I'm on the MC site now, other than to report a lost/stolen card, I don't see much there except for advertisement and such. |

I can't give concrete, specific examples as I have nothing to do with the business, but I imagine all credit card companies get a lot of online applications. |

The way it was explained to me, the transactions are between the banks, where the public has their accounts, and the merchants, where the public buys stuff. MasterCard and Visa just built infrastructure to process payments, they don't loan any money or anything. As long as the transactions go through, they make their money. The bank is where you apply for the card and make the payments, Visa and MasterCard have really nothing to do with the general public. |

Visa gets a nice little chuck of change every time we buy something, pretty much just for existing. They sunk a lot of money into the structure to begin with yeah, but they'll pretty big companies as far as the percentage of the population that does business though them. A couple thousand hackers trying to take on VISA MC and PayPal is like trying to take on a Aircraft carrier with a slingshot. |

Quote: The bank is where you apply for the card and make the payments, Visa and MasterCard have really nothing to do with the general public. Correct as someone that does IT Retail Support we have not lost a single transaction or a single dollar today becauce of this. It has been completely 100% invisible and have not had a single issue with Visa or Mastercard. When a customer at one of our stores swipes there credit card on a PinPad, it hits the local POS system who then forwards it to our centralized mainframe then its routed to the bank for verification, we get our 'approval' code back and the pinpad/POS (Point of Sale) gives the thumbs up. Really cannot go into much more detail than that.. |

The most amusing part? Anon has now opened themselves up to Patriot Act subpoenas and whatnot, I'm sure, by getting themselves classified as cyber-terrorists. |

Rorinthas wrote: Yay free association? I dont know if that really applies since the card issuer is under terms with the card user. If the concept were to become commonplace, what would happen if they decided to not allow their credit/debit cards to work w/ Democratic political sites? How about if the retailers didnt pony up more $ per transaction? I feel that these companies waded into a political s-storm and are starting to catch some debris. While the "attack" was deemed a bust, was it really? Was consumer confidence in the company shaken? Dont forget that perception is a big deal. How about those who have a limited grasp of tech? Mention hackers and a company enough times and people are going to be proactive and limit potential exposure. Remember, the actual hack isnt always the biggest issue. |

Hackers + Company that handles trillions of dollars of transactions a day + Chance for the public perception of stolen personal info = Damaging |

I don't think something that captured worldwide media attention is a "bust", unless of course, you're an idiot talking to an idiot. |

I'm not seeing it, until there are convenient alternatives folks will use plastic the same way they have been. And, MC and Visa agreements can and should be cancelled for cause - that merchant that was gaming google and the credit card system was cut off. Just business as usual, just sometimes there are folks that approve of the way they do business, and there are folks that don't. And capturing world wide attention? Who cares? Lindsay pukes or shows a nasty cooter and gets world wide attention these days. It ain't as important as it once was, and you can thank the Internet for that too, I suppose. |
